Victoria Women\xe2\x80\x99s Transition House (VWTH) is looking for a full-time, Family Law Advocate to join our team.
We are a non-profit charity, providing emergency shelter, counselling and support services for women of all ages, with or without children, fleeing from intimate partner violence and abuse. We are a vibrant, collaborative community looking for exceptional people to help us grow as we work towards our mission of ending intimate partner violence.
Details of the Position: The Family Law Advocate will provide direct, specialized, front-line family law support, advocacy and education for survivors of domestic violence and abuse in the greater Victoria area. The advocate will provide a range of Family Law support services to inform and assist our client\'s access to justice, in order to facilitate the resolution of their legal issues. The advocate will also provide Family Law information workshops to VWTH clients, staff and community partners . Other key responsibilities:
  • Asses clients suitability to the program and identify clients legal and non-legal needs; prioritize client needs and assist clients in action planning an navigating personal and systemic barriers.
  • Assist clients with legal procedures including drafting of legal forms, supporting clients related to legal proceedings.
  • Provide emotional and moral support and resources for self-advocacy.
  • Connect clients with program staff for additional support as needed.
  • Assist in safety planning and direct to crisis intervention services, as needed.
  • Ensure clients understand their legal rights and responsibilities when it comes to child protection matters.

Qualifications: A Juris Doctor with 2 years recent and related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as well as:
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant family law legislation, including child protection, maintenance enforcement, mediation and dispute resolution process
  • Working knowledge of data collection
  • Ability to explain complex legal matters in plain language
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage crisis situations.
  • Ability to thrive in an independent work environment and work cooperatively as part of a team.

This position must have a valid drivers license and own vehicle. It requires union membership, satisfactory completion of a criminal records search, TB test and Standard First Aid Certificate.
Wage and Benefits:
This is a union position and starts at $38.82 per hour. Excellent extended health and dental, pension plan. Paid sick time and three weeks paid vacation
