Position Summary
The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta invites applications for a
Faculty Safety Advisor
. In this pivotal role, you will champion and enhance health, safety, and emergency management practices across one of the university's largest faculties. Reporting to the Deputy Faculty General Manager, you will be a trusted advisor to academic and administrative leaders, supporting the development and implementation of safe work practices in compliance with University of Alberta policy and provincial legislation.
This is a full-time, continuing position responsible for operationalizing the University's Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS) and cultivating a proactive safety culture across diverse environments including labs, clinics, workshops, and research facilities. You will also serve as a liaison to central safety units and participate on university-level and faculty-level safety committees.
Duties
Implement and promote health and safety programs, including HSEMS and Culture of Care.
Conduct and support lab safety inspections, clearances, incident investigations, and emergency planning.
Assist units with customizing SOPs and hazard assessments when central templates are unavailable.
Provide expert advice on occupational health and safety, hazard mitigation, and regulatory compliance.
Develop and deliver safety training and presentations; maintain safety documentation and records.
Lead or participate in the Faculty's HSE Committee; act as alternate to the university's HSE Senior Administrators' Committee.
Manage faculty-level tools and communication, including safety content for the website and faculty safety inbox.
Collaborate with Utilities and Operations, Facility Service Partners, Protective Services and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
Serve as a key contact for internal departments and external agencies on safety-related issues.
Minimum Qualifications
A
degree in Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
designation.
3 years of experience
in occupational health and safety roles, preferably in complex institutions.
In-depth knowledge of
OHS legislation
, emergency management practices, and risk mitigation.
Demonstrated ability to
interpret and apply policies
, identify compliance risks, and implement solutions.
Experience with safety investigations, documentation, training coordination, and site inspections.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholder groups.
Proficiency in tools such as
Cascade, ARISE
, and HSE-related software such as chemical inventory or hazardous waste management.
Current
First Aid and CPR
certification.
Preferred Qualifications
Occupational or industrial hygiene experience.
Experience working in
university or research-intensive environments.
Familiarity with lab safety protocols and procedures (e.g., WHMIS, TDG, HAZWOPER).
Experience developing and presenting safety training and communication tools.
Working knowledge of the University of Alberta's administrative systems and policies.
