Job Description


Overview

The Faculty Financial Analyst is an integral member of the Finance team in the Dean\xe2\x80\x99s Office which is responsible for ensuring that all financial activity in the Faculty of Science is appropriately accounted for, that internal processes and controls are appropriately applied, and that available financial management tools are effectively utilized. Additionally, the Faculty Financial Analyst is responsible for the delivery of management financial reports, and financial analysis as identified by the Dean, Executive Officer and Director, Faculty Financial Operations (DFO) in support of financial management, planning and control within the Faculty of Science.

Responsibilities

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Develops, in conjunction with the DFO, reports spanning all funds to meet management reporting informational needs
  • Prepares and delivers established management financial reports
  • Reviews and monitors financial statements across all funds identifying concerns to the DFO and other relevant stakeholders
  • Supports the annual budget process with the preparation of operating budget workbooks, and creates budgets for the two large Science endowments \xe2\x80\x93 Watsef and Faculty Science Foundation (FSF)
  • Performs adhoc analysis as required to support management decision making, and to ensure the integrity of financial information and transactions in the Faculty of Science
Financial Management & Internal Control
  • Recommends to the DFO improvements to Science financial processes, and participates in proactive action related to concerns identified during financial statement and transaction review
  • Supports the DFO in maintaining the financial management structure of the Faculty of Science and its integrity
  • Manages the PCard framework for the Faculty of Science conducting period audits and recommends improvements from a risk control perspective
  • Conducts periodic reviews of Science user access to all financial systems and works with departments to ensure access provided is appropriate and up to date
  • Reviews outstanding purchase order lists and works with departments to ensure accuracy of the lists
  • Reviews advance lists and works with departments to ensure old advances are settled
  • Reviews status of research grants and identifies material deficits from a Faculty risk perspective
  • Manages the financial oversight of the CRCs in Science on behalf of the Dean
  • Reviews asset management practices in the Faculty of Science, recommending improvements related to information collection and management
Financial Transaction Review & Records Management
  • Reviews and reconciles assigned operating work orders and the two major endowments, Watsef and Faculty Science Foundation (FSF)
  • Reviews PCard transactions of PCard holders in the Faculty of Science core support services
  • Reviews Accounts Payable transactions in Unit 4 for under the Dean\xe2\x80\x99s Office umbrella
  • Manages information related to equipment inventory under the Dean\xe2\x80\x99s Office umbrella
  • Manages the Dean of Science Finance sharepoint site structure and information
Financial Leadership, Training and Development
  • Serves as a resource to Science staff and faculty with regards to financial systems from a user perspective
  • Identifies training needs and opportunities and supports the DFO in the development, documentation and delivery of training
  • Acts as a resource to Science staff and faculty in reading and understanding financial reports
  • Acts as a resource to Science staff and faculty concerning financial policies and procedures
Qualifications
  • Undergrad degree required, preferably BBA, BCom or equivalent
  • CPA designation required (legacy CPA,CA or CPA,CMA or CPA,CGA)
  • Minimum five years of related experience in financial management reporting, analysis and planning
  • Working experience on enterprise financial software and databases
  • Experience in an academic environment preferred
  • Supervisory/management experience is an asset
  • Excellent understanding of generally accepted accounting principles in Canada and their application to accounting in a higher education setting
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; working knowledge of Power BI an asset
  • Strong analytical, technical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, work well under pressure and execute a wide variety of tasks while managing conflicting priorities within required timelines
  • Strong interpersonal skills which translate to the ability to build excellent working relationships with individuals at all levels in the University, both within and outside the Faculty of Science
