Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Director, Space Planning & Management, the Facilities Designer is responsible for participating in planning, organizing and managing projects that are identified as OISE priorities. The incumbent will work with clients to formulate plans and designs which are practical, aesthetic and conducive to achieving the function and purpose objectives of the project. They will work collaboratively with the team to provide interior space layouts and furnishing plans following priorities set and adhering to established deadlines; investigate various sources of information as required, by reviewing departmental academic plans, the existing use of space and meeting with individuals and groups within the division; prepare analyses, including assessments of the use of various types of space; and determine the physical resources available and what is required to accommodate the existing and planned functions of the division.

The incumbent will also prepare CAD documents for planning, design, construction, incorporate AV documents, specifications for tender, and for implementation of projects; write reportsand prepares technical appendices, specifications, schedules, inspections and supporting information; obtain on site measurements, record information and translate into CAD base documents for use in project planning; prepare concept drawings or functional layouts and outlines space program requirements and provides a scope of work for the purpose of preparing project cost estimates; evaluate tenders and quotes, negotiate contracts, and prepare and monitor project cost estimates; and manage and coordinateconstruction project with Project and Property Management, Architects, Engineers, and all related consultants.

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Analyzing designated area in support of furnishing plans
  • Creating furnishing and interior space layouts
  • Developing viable design solutions and artistic renderings
  • Creating detailed space utilization analysis and assessments for use in client proposals
  • Verifying the accuracy of design requirements
  • Reviewing technical design documents prior to revision
  • Liaising with contacts to coordinate the installation of furnishings
  • Generating tender packages

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Architecture, Planning or Interior Design or acceptable equivalent combination of equivalent experience. Registration with ARIDO or OAA an asset.
  • Minimum five years\' recent and relevant design experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in general interior design with emphasis on designing layouts assessing user needs, and selecting furniture through to installation, move-in and deficiency follow up.
  • Demonstrated experience in space analysis, utilization studies, functional plans and planning reports.
  • Experience leading renovation projects that include furniture procurement, orders, costing, tenders and contract administration.
  • Experience coordinating work of vendors and third parties as part of renovation projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and layout graphic materials for presentation and/or publication.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and design of systems furniture.
  • Experience in the review of specifications, shop drawings and site (field) review of projects during construction.
  • Demonstrated success in building collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advanced computer skills including: AutoCAD with experience in the preparation of architectural drawings, Google Sketchup, Microsoft Office, Excel and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Highly developed analytical and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to generate new ideas. Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaborative with stakeholders and communicate detailed plans to non-subject matter experts.
  • A high degree of client service orientation is essential as well as the ability to gain consensus on technical and design issues.
  • Must possess the ability to adapt to new technical changes in architectural design and representation.
  • The ability to evaluate tenders and quotes, as well as the ability to negotiate contracts.
  • Evidence of leadership, initiative, diplomacy and excellent judgement.
  • Ability to set priorities and targets and to meet deadlines in relation to frequently changing demands.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 14 - $81,000 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $103,588. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
