Nature & Scope
The Violence Against Women Intervention and Support Services (VAWISS) provides a comprehensive range of services to support women and children seeking safety from violence. The program includes the Y Women's Emergency Shelter, which offers refuge, 24/7 phone support, and referrals to community resources. Additionally, the Stopping The Violence Outreach Services and the PEACE Program offer community-based support, counseling, and group activities to empower women and assist children who have witnessed violence. Housing Outreach is also available to aid in navigating housing systems and provide short-term housing subsidies.
Reporting to the Director of Programs, this position will involve daily tasks such as checking in with shelter staff, cleaning vacant rooms and common areas, sanitizing touchpoints, restocking supplies, and handling laundry and donations. Weekly duties involve ordering supplies, managing garbage bins, replacing light bulbs, and performing minor repairs. Monthly tasks include attending safety meetings, conducting fire alarms, and touch-up painting. Seasonal chores vary from lawn maintenance and gardening in spring/summer to raking leaves and de-icing in fall/winter. Additionally, the role involves connecting with outside service providers and performing other duties as required.
Major Responsibilities

Daily chores include:
+ checking in with shelter staff to see what needs to be prioritized for the day
+ Cleaning any vacant rooms along with bathrooms
+ Clean and sanitize all touchpoints throughout the day
+ Sweep, mop and vacuum all floors (except occupied bedrooms)
+ Clean windows and glass surfaces
+ Clean and tidy all common areas
+ Restock supplies (hand soap, garbage bags, paper towel, etc.)
+ Laundry
+ Sorting and putting away any donations
+ Sweeping perimeter of shelter and checking for any inconsistencies (i.e. Sharps, garbage tossed over fence, anything broken, etc.)
+ Fixing/maintaining items that need immediate attention
+ With the support of Leadership, booking outside contractors for maintenance outside of Facility Attendant's scope Weekly chores include
+ Ordering in any supplies needed
+ Take out and bring in garbage bins
+ Check all lights and replace bulbs as needed
+ Wiping down blinds
+ Tidy upper and lower deck
+ Taking excess donations away
+ Cleaning main floor and Staff bathroom
+ Wipe down living room furniture
+ Sanitize kitchen chairs
+ Work on minor repairs throughout the house Monthly basis
+ Attend Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHS) committee
+ Conduct Fire Alarm
+ Touch up painting and fixing
+ Wash curtains, if needed Seasonal tasks
+ Spring/Summer - outside lawn maintenance, light gardening, cleaning garbage bins, uncover A/C, tidy up parking lot, clean windows, set up garden and outside furniture, hand water garden as needed
+ Fall/Winter - raking leaves, shoveling, de icing, book company to maintain irrigation system Connecting and supervising outside shelter providers (plumbing and heating, appliance repair, etc.)

Qualification

you bring:
High School Diploma
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS) certification - this can be provided by the employer
Level One First Aid - this is a job requirement however, if you do not have we will sign you up for a course and the fee will be paid by the employee and the hours to attend the workshop will be paid by the employer. For all renewals both the cost and hours will be provided by the employer
Obtain a valid Class 5 driver's license
Be able to lift 50lbs
Be able to work independently and respectfully in a shelter environment
Understanding of boundaries and how to redirect
Knowledge of how to research and implement small tasks
Time management and ability to prioritize tasks
Awareness of universal precautions
Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
