The University of Toronto Scarborough has been a leader in co-operative education and work integrated learning (WIL), for 40 years. Co-op and WIL give students an opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom, and to expand their knowledge through related work experience. The Department of Arts and Science Co-op is responsible for preparing over 2,700 undergraduate students from 37 academic areas to compete for paid co-op work term opportunities. The department is also responsible for engaging industry partners who provide these work terms. A coordinated effort among the stakeholders of student, employer, and university co-op programming contribute to the development of well qualified graduates who are prepared to assume a productive role in society. With a commitment to the equity, diversity and inclusion and the campus' 'Inclusive Excellence' mission, the department works closely with academic departments and support services on campus and with employer and community partners to support students as they work to achieve their academic and co-op/integrated learning aspirations.

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Partnerships and External Relations, the incumbent plays a vital role in the department to ensure that co-op students have a wide range of quality, paid co-op work term opportunities to apply to. Within a territory of particular industry sectors, the External Relations Officer takes a planned and informed approach to meeting new job development and account retention targets.

While balancing all stakeholder needs effectively, the primary goal of the position is to develop, nurture and manage strong co-op employer partner relationships for the purpose of creating high quality, academically relevant, paid co-op work term opportunities. The External Relations Officer is responsible for developing and initiating all aspects of new co-op employer relationships that strategically support the academic programs within the portfolio. Using an analytical and informed approach, the incumbent is responsible for conducting market research to understand the industry sectors assigned to them and identifying target markets appropriate for co-op job development. Through sound sales, business development and partnership building techniques, the External Relations Officer builds their employer partner account base by planning and undertaking first contact with potential new employers to develop more, quality co-op job opportunities. With an ultimate goal of strong retention and partnership expansion, the External Relations Officer is responsible for maintaining and expanding existing relationships with employers. With a strong customer service orientation, the External Relations Officer skillfully balances the needs of all stakeholders and ensures that their employer partners' experience with our program is excellent.

In consultation with the Assistant Director, the incumbent will set an annual plan for their territory and performance targets both for new employer development and account retention with companies and organizations with strong co-op job potential each work term. All of this is done on the foundation and ultimate collective goal of facilitating student success and supporting their co-op ambitions.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
  • Identifying, fostering and maintaining relationships with potential and existing employers
  • Promoting programming, student needs and interests to employers and industry contacts
  • Conducting detailed labour market analysis to inform program and partnership development
  • Researching and analyzing potential employers and recommending student placement opportunities
  • Tracking the status of business development initiatives, activities and outcomes
  • Evaluating job prospects in alignment with student academic goals
  • Keeping well-informed on economic and market trends and competitor environments
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum five years of experience in a sales or business development role
  • Experience in market research and analysis, identification of target markets as well as direct sales and relationship development
  • Track record of success in a target driven environment generating new business and building client relationships in existing and new market sectors
  • Strong understanding and experience implementing business development and sales funnel approaches and tracking activities to desired outcome
  • Strong evidence of timely adherence to lead management processes and protocols to facilitate a smooth and efficient lead nurturing and distribution process
  • Motivated through individual planning and target achievement, yet still thrives in a collaborative team-based environment

  • Enthusiastic self-starter with strong entrepreneurial skills, proactive in driving the effort to increase a client base and close negotiations in the development of opportunities for students
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to effectively balance the needs of multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to speak to and lead targeted group presentations
  • Good judgement, tact and discretion and able to resolve issues, problems and competing goals
  • Organized, able to prioritize work and multi-task to facilitate a balance of planned execution and adherence to process while still ensuring an efficient pace
  • Good written and verbal communications skills, with a strong emphasis on influencing skills
Assets (Nonessential):
  • Experience in marketing, developing marketing strategies, and promotional materials
  • Knowledge of the career services industry and experience within a Co-operative Education or Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) environment
  • Experience using Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software such as Salesforce.com
