We are looking for an experienced legal assistant to work in a busy law practice which is litigation focussed. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a law firm and understand litigation procedures and processes, including court scheduling, managing deadlines, court filings, preparing court documents, financial statements in family law proceedings. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, excellent communication abilities, and a solid understanding of legal procedure at all levels of court in British Columbia. This position offers an opportunity to develop legal expertise in a professional environment, with responsibilities spanning document management, client interaction, and case preparation, working with a small team of lawyers and other assistants.
Responsibilities
Proofread legal documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable standards
Working with court scheduling at all levels of court to schedule court matters
Working with opposing counsel to schedule applications, trials, examinations for discovery, mediations and so on
Assist in project management tasks related to ongoing cases and legal filings
Support interviewing processes for clients, witnesses, or experts as needed
Manage electronic documents and case files
Perform administrative duties including data entry, filing, and maintaining organized case files
Billing time in CLIO for firm lawyers and for court related administrative work
Draft legal documents, correspondence, and reports with precision and clarity
Handle phone inquiries with professional phone etiquette and direct calls appropriately
Help prepare lawyers for court appearances, examinations for discovery, mediations and key meetings
Meet with clients to gather information and prepare memorandums for client files
Requirements
Experience in a legal setting working with litigation lawyers
Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively
Excellent proofreading and writing skills for drafting clear and accurate legal documents
Experience with managing case files
Knowledge of legal drafting, filing procedures, scheduling and case management
Good interviewing skills for interacting professionally with clients and witnesses
Strong phone etiquette and professional communication skills
Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
