The Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society has been providing care for animals since 1925. We help more than 1,700 animals each year in the Algoma region and surrounding communities.
The City of Sault Ste. Marie provides funding for Animal Care & Control Services and sheltering. We are a registered charity, relying on donations & fundraising for our programs, which include everything from veterinary care, adoption and foster programs, providing enrichment items, food, treats and comfort items to the animals, and more.
Role
We are seeking a visionary Executive Director to lead our organization into its next century. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for advancing our mission through strong leadership, community partnerships and strategic growth.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
Deliver on the organization's mission through programs & services aligned with community needs.
Animal Care Oversight:
Ensure that the animals are treated with compassion and the highest standard of care.
Organizational Leadership:
Inspire and support staff and volunteers through a positive, collaborative and inclusive culture.
Community Engagement:
Enhance relationships within the community through promoting the shelter's work and advocating for animal welfare.
Fundraising & Communications:
Provide guidance to staff to expand efforts to fundraise and educate the public on animal welfare.
Operational Management:
Ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the shelter, including facility management, financial oversight and regulatory compliance.
Board Partnership:
Provide high quality updates to the Board of Directors and seek timely guidance on strategic matters.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications include:
Deep commitment and compassion for the well-being of animals
Understanding of municipal animal care & control laws, PAWS act and regulations, Shelter regulations, and Dog Owners Liability Act
Track record of leading high performing teams
Extensive experience with strategic planning and financial management (within a non-profit environment would be an asset)
Proven record of building and maintaining relationships in the community
Strong operational management skills with a focus on optimizing resources and improving processes
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications specifically the use of Excel, Power Point, and Word
Preferred qualifications include:
Post-secondary education in animal welfare, veterinary or business programs
5 or more years' experience in leadership
Fundraising and donor relations experience
