Job Description


The Executive Director of Advancement will hold a pivotal leadership role at UWinnipeg, closely aligned with the President and Vice-Chancellor, and collaborating extensively with The University of Winnipeg Foundation. This position leads the development of the university\'s major gift and alumni relations strategies.Responsibilities:Strategic Planning and Direction

  • Provides leadership in development by identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual and corporate prospective donors, to support specific initiatives identified by the President.
  • Develops strategies designed to attract increased giving/and or major gift commitments from UWinnipeg alumni.
  • Provides leadership in working with senior administration on fundraising strategies and priorities and works with both academic and non-academic administrators to achieve donation goals and priorities.
  • Works with leadership across all areas of the University in the development and alignment of fundraising and alumni engagement priorities, strategies, and plans.
  • Determines and presents fundable projects for consideration to prospective donors. Identifies opportunities for philanthropic investment that align with the university\'s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Leads proactive collaboration with UW Foundation staff on policies, initiatives, and strategies related to fundraising.
  • Drives effective coordination and collaboration between the Advancement office and the Foundation.
  • Initiates and facilitates strategic discussions and joint planning sessions with Foundation counterparts.
  • Provides leadership and oversight of the alumni relations team, promoting an organizational culture that fosters open and frequent communication, teamwork, and a passion for the University\xe2\x80\x99s success.
Leadership and Financial Management
  • Leads the development and execution of an institution-wide alumni engagement strategy that is integrated and intended to enhance the University\xe2\x80\x99s relationship with its alumni community.
  • Develops and implements appropriate processes, systems, and evaluation measurements to ensure the practical delivery of responsive, efficient, and effective alumni engagement and development.
  • Identify areas for improvement and innovation, proactively driving initiatives to enhance the quality and impact of alumni engagement efforts.
  • Oversees the advancement structure and determines resource requirements for the unit identifying opportunities for optimization.
  • Manages and develops the Advancement budget by establishing targets and projections, authorizing, and monitoring expenditures, identifying efficiencies and potential savings, and initiating changes as necessary to meet goals.
  • Determines the organizational structure and required resources, methods of work, assignments, and duties, responsibilities, and qualifications for positions in the development and alumni relations units.
  • Shapes and monitors direct report\xe2\x80\x99s annual and long-range plans and ensures progress and alignment with the University\xe2\x80\x99s strategic priorities and directions.
  • Manages employee performance by supporting the performance goals of the team, completing evaluations based on individual work and performance goals, addressing performance-related matters, and providing coaching as part of the employee development process.
  • Develop processes and guidelines specific to the advancement unit and conduct regular reviews and updates to ensure effective operations.
Alumni and Donor Engagement and Other Responsibilities
  • Identifies, attracts, motivates, and develops results-oriented teams comprised of alumni volunteer/affinity groups locally, nationally, and internationally, along with the internal university community stakeholders.
  • Executes fundraising strategies. Contacts and solicits prospects, donors, and alumni using a variety of outreach activities and techniques.
  • Develop the strategy for implementing engagement events and programming that increase the knowledge, awareness, interest, involvement, and commitment of the major constituent groups.
  • Works with senior administration to determine their specific fundraising needs, create a strategy to meet those needs, and assist in implementation to reach them.
  • Leads special projects and collaborates with stakeholders across the university to ensure alignment with strategic priorities and to maximize impact.
  • Keeps current on developments in the advancement field, as well as related University policies, practices, and regulations.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant community, political, social, and economic factors. Actively engages with external stakeholders to build relationships, cultivate support, and advance the university\'s mission and objectives in alignment with the prevailing environmental factors.
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma.
  • Advancement and development courses working towards the CFRE designation is an asset.
  • 7-10 years of work experience in the development field is required.
  • 2-5 years of experience in higher education or the public sector is preferred.
  • 2-5 years of experience in leading fundraising strategies or teams is preferred.
  • Extensive experience writing proposals or preparing fundraising plans is required.
  • Experience in providing strategic advice to senior management is an asset.
  • Experience working with volunteer boards of directors and not-for-profit organizations is an asset.
  • Knowledge of all office software programs for PC or Mac, such as Microsoft Office programs, is required.
  • Knowledge and experience with databases and prospect management systems is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with high-level officials in a senior management environment.
  • Exceptional leadership, management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to problem-solve, to make decisions and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and initiative.
  • Advanced oral, written, research and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of communications theories, practices, and methods, including fundraising and alumni engagement techniques and approaches, and their potential impacts.
  • Knowledge of the academic teaching and research environment, and issues facing faculty and post-secondary students.
  • Ability to develop proactive strategies and plans in alignment with university objectives and policies.
  • Ability to manage a staff of employees and supervise students and volunteers.
  • Ability to develop, plan, organize, implement programs and systems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of internal and external contacts.
  • Experience leading with tact, diplomacy, and respect.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.Condition(s) of Employment:
