Job Description


Reporting to SKIP\'s Scientific Director, the Executive Director will play a critical role in ensuring a successful transition and shaping SKIP\'s strategic direction. The Executive Director will lead the transition of SKIP from a Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE)-funded network to an official research centre at Dalhousie University (effective April 1, 2024).
Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for the transition of SKIP into an official university research centre while providing visionary leadership to the SKIP team and establishing partnerships with interested parties, including researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, community organizations, and patients and families.
  • Transition Management: Oversee all aspects of SKIP\'s transition process, ensuring smooth and efficient operations and clear communications while collaborating with internal and external partners to navigate administrative, financial, and logistical aspects, ensuring compliance with university policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge Mobilization and Innovation: Provide leadership and guidance of knowledge mobilization activities during the transition to a research centre while fostering a culture of innovation and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange among knowledge users and partners and facilitating the acquisition of funding to support SKIP\'s activities.
  • Resource Management: Develop and manage the annual budget for SKIP\'s transition, ensuring financial sustainability and accountability and oversee resource allocation for SKIP\'s transition to a research centre, including human resources, facilities, equipment, and materials while establishing effective monitoring and evaluation mechanisms for SKIP as a research centre.
  • Advocacy and Partner Engagement: Represent SKIP as a key spokesperson (e.g., conferences, symposiums, media) during the transition. Advocate for the needs of children and youth living with pain, collaborating with policymakers and healthcare organizations to drive positive change in pain management practices. Build strong relationships to foster collaborations and leverage resources to advance the organization\'s goals.
Note

Local and national travel, estimated to be a 5-10% time commitment, is required. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet operational requirements.

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Master\'s degree in health sciences, psychology, management, or other relevant field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated leadership experience guiding an organization through significant change/transformation.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing research or knowledge mobilization initiatives, preferably in children\'s health.
  • Strong understanding of the research landscape and funding mechanisms, with a proven track record of successful grant applications and publications.
  • Proven leadership skills, including strategic planning, team management, and partner engagement.
  • Experience in reporting to a Board of Directors or other governance experience, including providing regular updates, preparing reports, and collaborating with board members to align organizational strategies with the overall vision and mission of SKIP.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse partners and knowledge users, including researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and community partners.
  • Experience in managing budgets and resources effectively, ensuring financial sustainability and accountability.
  • A passion for improving the lives of children and youth living with pain and a commitment to advancing evidence-based practices in pediatric pain management.
Assets
  • Doctoral degree in health sciences, psychology, management, or relevant field.
  • Bilingualism (proficiency in both verbal and written English and French) as SKIP engages with diverse partners and knowledge users across Canada, including Francophone communities.
