About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a Mi'kmaw person with strong leadership skills and expertise in Etuaptmumk/ Two-Eyed Seeing (E/TES) to support the Department of Education and Early Child Development with the authentic, effective application of E/TES as a guiding principle within the Public Schools Program and with infusing E/TES into Treaty Education, curricula, and resource development.

The position of the Etuaptmumk Consultant reports to the Director of the Mi'kmaw Services Branch, EECD.

Primary Accountabilities

The responsibilities of the E/TES Consultant include:

  • To support the application of E/TES as a guiding principle as it is identified and described in the Treaty Education Framework for Curriculum Development and as it aligns with Mi'kmaw Ways of Being and Knowing
  • To maintain an inclusive working relationship with Mi'kmaw Elders and Knowledge Holders to ensure all work done is accurate, authentic, and sacred
  • To work collaboratively with other EECD staff and provincial teacher teams to support the inclusion of E/TES in cross-curricular opportunities, at all grade levels, and as designated
  • To take a lead role to grow the learning of other educators by developing and facilitating ongoing E/TES professional learning sessions for teachers of all grade levels and multiple disciplines, regional staff, and EECD staff
  • To develop and/or identify resources that support teachers in their understanding of E/TES and assist with growing understanding of E/TES for students of all ages
  • To work in partnership with Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey to co-contribute ideas for programs, teaching supports, and student resources
  • To establish and maintain connections with educational partners outside of EECD, including those in community organizations and other provincial and federal government departments
  • To commit to strengthening the work and priorities of Mi'kmaw Services Branch, as determined by various project requirements
  • To perform other related duties as assigned in support of the Minister's mandate, the priorities of the Mi'kmaw Services Branch, and the collective work of EECD.

Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have extensive knowledge of Etuaptmumk and Mi'kmaw ways of being and knowing and, at minimum, have a bachelors' degree or a professional designation in a related discipline. You have extensive knowledge of Mi'kmaw ways or being and knowing, Treaty Education, Netukulimk and Etuaptmumk and are familiar with the Nova Scotia science curriculum, culturally responsive practices, and inclusive education.

You are a proven educational leader, who wants to be part of an innovative team, and who strives to make a difference for Mi'kmaw/Indigenous learners. You possess strong interpersonal skills and effective verbal and written communication. You are competent with technology, and familiar using Microsoft office programs.

You have a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with groups and individuals with diverse or competing interests or perspectives.

You are focused and flexible, with the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with an action-oriented team. You are motivated to meet deadlines and achieve set goals, have strong organizational skills and are able to deal effectively with a demanding and challenging workload.

You are comfortable and confident as a presenter, having experience facilitating educational sessions specifically in the areas of Mi'kmaw teachings and Etuaptmumk. Yet, you see yourself as a lifelong learner and welcome opportunities to continue to grow.
  • Being a Mi'kmaw language speaker is considered an asset.

Pay Grade: PR 20

Salary Range: $3,387.99 - $3,989.08 Bi-Weekly
