Appliance technicians service and repair domestic and commercial appliances with a main focus on coffee equipment. They are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing various household and commercial appliances, as well as performing the required preventative maintenance.
Job duties and responsibilities
Small electrical appliance servicers and repairers
Repair small electrical appliances, such as residential espresso machines, coffee grinders and panini presses.
Consult customers or refer to work orders to establish the nature of the appliance malfunction
Observe the appliance's operation and conduct voltage, resistance and other tests using electrical test equipment
Refer to schematic drawings or product manuals and replace or repair parts or components using hand tools and soldering equipment
Prepare estimates, written reports and invoices of the work performed
Major appliance repairers/technicians
Repair major appliances, such as domestic and commercial coffee and espresso equipment, pasta boilers, pasta machines, gelato machines, refrigerators and dishwashers at the customer's place of business, home, or the repair shop
Consult customers or refer to work orders to establish the nature of the appliance malfunction
Diagnose faults by checking controls, solenoid valves, pumps, electric motors, heating elements, fans and other components using test equipment such as meters and gauges to measure resistance, current, voltage, pressure, temperature, and flow rates
Refer to schematic diagrams or product manuals and disassemble appliances using hand tools
Use shop equipment and specialized diagnostic tools to repair, adjust and reprogram appliances
Replace components and subcomponents and reassemble appliances using hand tools and soldering equipment
Prepare estimates, written reports and invoices of the work performed
Process customer's payment
May plan service routes
Requirements and skills
Proven work experience as an Appliance Service Technician or similar role
Sufficient experience in and knowledge of appliance repair and installation
Basic computer literacy
Postsecondary training from a trade or vocational school is preferred.
Excellent customer service skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Manual dexterity
Physical and mental stamina
Ability to lift 70-80 lb from the ground
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Valid class 5 driving license with a clean driving record
