This instructional role supports newcomers in integrating into Canada by enhancing their English language skills within a client-centred, real-world, task-based classroom environment. The instructor will respect the diversity of clients' backgrounds and learning styles while planning effective modules and activities that motivate learners to practice and demonstrate their English language competencies in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. The instructor will utilize proactive communication skills and classroom management strategies to maintain a customer-centred environment that respects both staff and client diversity and ensures that funder contractual obligations are met or exceeded, aligned with CFN's vision and workplace values. This role involves close collaboration with other instructors and the program coordinator.
Key Result Areas and Responsibilities:
ClassroomAccurately assess the needs, goals, and progress of individual learners using activities and techniques appropriate to the learner's English level
Use the Canadian Language Benchmarks (2012) and Portfolio-Based Language Assessment processes to plan level-appropriate modules and daily lessons based on client-identified themes
Facilitate meaningful and engaging activities for learners to learn, practice and demonstrate the four competencies in each of the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing
Use authentic and level-appropriate materials, special speakers, field trips and technology to enrich the learning experience
Provide level-appropriate informal and scheduled formal feedback to learners on their language strengths, weaknesses, and progress
Independently use appropriate conflict-resolution and communication strategies to manage learner expectations or concerns regarding language progress, assessment results, and attendance
AdministrativeAccurately maintain digital and/or written records of students' attendance, basic personal information, current Canadian Language Benchmarks, and progress as requested and/or scheduled
Accurately maintain digital and/or written records of classroom modules, lessons, and activities as requested and/or scheduled
Respect and follow policies and guidelines regarding the Centre's resources, materials, equipment, and classrooms
Pro-actively participate and problem-solve with colleagues and program administration staff during scheduled meetings
Contribute to the Midterm and End-of-term Final Report

Qualifications
Service Orientation
: Cultural sensitivity and experience related to teaching adults in an English as an Additional Language classroom context; Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence
Education
: A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required, preferably in Teaching English as a Second or Additional Language, Linguistics, Education, or a related field. Completion of specific courses or professional development related to teaching EAL, EAL methodology, Canadian Language Benchmarks, and Portfolio Language Assessment is an advantage.
Technical
: Strong computer skills if taught online; proven ability to introduce adult students to technology as a learning resource; able to solve common technical issues and deliver technology orientations to students if taught online.
Teamwork
: Proactively participates in team activities, sharing ideas, concerns, and solutions; able to work/volunteer during some weekends or evenings for program promotion events.
Communication
: Effectively listens to and responds to student needs; communicates orally and in writing to meet expressed needs
Working conditions
Class hours, preparation and meeting times, and session schedules as per the agreement with the funding organization.

1. English Language Programs for Vulnerable Populations (ELPVP) Instructors - 12 hours/week
o One Afternoon class: 1:00-3:00 PM
o Two Evening classes: 4:00-7:00 PM and 6:00-9:00 PM (online)
o Expected start date: October 20
3. Digital ESL for Seniors (DES) - 8 hours/week + 4 hours of tutoring/week
o Three Afternoon classes: 1:00-3:00 PM
o Expected start date: October 27
