About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Provincial Director of Infection Prevention and Control and, working closely with the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control and IPAC leadership team, the epidemiologist is responsible for the ongoing development, use, and evaluation of a comprehensive and integrated provincial infection prevention and control surveillance system to support timely evidence-informed decision-making at all levels of NSHA. Other responsibilities include investigation of outbreaks/clusters, using epidemiologic tools to evaluate interventions and quality improvement initiatives, contributing to translation of data into institutional best practice and policy, and the conduct of applied epidemiological research. This work is used to inform all aspects of a comprehensive and provincially integrated Infection Control Program to achieve the best outcomes in health care program and service delivery.

The Epidemiologist assists in the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections, including infections with antimicrobial resistant and epidemiologically significant microorganisms in the healthcare setting by translating research into practice. They provide leadership in the design, conduct, analysis, reporting and publishing of research, quality improvement and administrative surveillance projects related to infection prevention and control.

The position provides expert advice and leadership in epidemiology and surveillance and provides statistical and epidemiological analysis of infection prevention and control data to support research, decision making, planning, and policy development. The Epidemiologist assists in the identification and evaluation of issues that may jeopardize patient safety and advances the epidemiological and surveillance decision support, information management and knowledge translation functions for the infection prevention and control program.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Epidemiology (e.g. MSc, etc.) and 5-7 years related experience in a hospital setting
  • Experience in hospital epidemiology preferred
  • Eligible for registration with relevant health discipline/college or association, where applicable
  • Thorough understanding of infection diseases and epidemiological principles
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of the scientific basis and principles of infection prevention and experience with the design, implementation and evaluation of infection prevention efforts
  • Demonstrated expertise in knowledge transfer through teaching, presentations at scientific meetings, and publication of findings
  • Demonstrated proficient experience with facilitation and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated experience conducting methodologically sound, interdisciplinary, evidence-based epidemiological research, preferably in a field related to infectious diseases
  • Demonstrated analytical and statistical skills including ability to define, collect, analyze, and interpret data, use statistical concepts, and prepare written reports
  • Experience compiling, analyzing and interpreting epidemiological or surveillance information for technical reports or briefing materials
  • Demonstrated skills in advanced research methodologies and statistical analysis
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Project management skills to manage multiple/conflicting deadlines and priorities
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written, presentation)
  • Advanced time management and organizational skills
  • Valid Nova Scotia drivers\' license; Access to a reliable vehicle required
  • Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

Compensation and Incentives

$41.48 - $51.85 Hourly
