ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:

The Environmental Scientist/Engineer will be responsible for providing leadership, project management and environmental technical expertise organization-wide in supporting overall operations and project delivery at Ontario Northland. This position will help deliver on a corporate mandate for strong environmental oversight and performance.

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leading and providing technical guidance to a broad range of environmental assessment/management work tasks within a dynamic team setting
  • Assisting ONTC departments in completing environmental reviews to meet regulatory obligations
  • Assisting with identifying and managing a wide range of project environmental constraints (e.g., fisheries/aquatics, terrestrial ecology, species at risk, geotechnical, hydrology, soils/groundwater, cultural heritage, air/noise, water treatment/discharge, designated substances, waste management systems, fuel tanks, etc.)
  • Evaluating and securing/maintaining necessary environmental permits/approvals for projects
  • Planning and carrying out technical environmental field work and studies for sample collection, data analysis and reporting
  • Identifying potential environmental impacts and developing sound mitigation and monitoring measures
  • Providing assistance with legal/contractual matters, as needed
  • Managing legacy/contaminated sites, including the coordination of Phase I, II and III Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) for due-diligence/remedial purposes in satisfying regulatory requirements
  • Participating in internal/external planning meetings; assisting with critical stakeholder consultation (e.g., employees, public, agency, First Nations, industry peers, etc.)
  • Coordinating contractors and consulting/engineering vendors, as needed
  • Completing environmental site inspections, audits and inventories of ONTC operations, sites and facilities
  • Utilizing and maintaining a wide range of technical field equipment, sampling gear and specialized scientific instruments
  • Preparing summary briefings, technical reports/memos, presentations
  • Researching and developing environmental best practice guidelines and management plans
  • Providing assistance to other environmental disciplines (e.g., GIS mapping, sustainability initiatives)
  • Reviewing potential grant programs and preparing proposal applications
  • Responding to emergency situations/incidents (e.g., potential spills, derailments, washouts, etc.)
  • Managing and mentoring junior staff, as needed
REQUIREMENTS:
  • University degree in Environmental Sciences or Engineering, Ecology, Earth Sciences, Physical Geography, Environmental Management/Assessment (or comparable) with 3-5 years\xe2\x80\x99 related experience preferred (Masters/advance degree considered an additional asset); or similar College diploma with approximately 8 to 10 years\xe2\x80\x99 related experience.
  • At least 3-5 years\xe2\x80\x99 work experience within the Environmental Assessment and Management field, with professional Consulting/Engineering experience preferred/considered a strong asset
  • Good industry project experience preferred, particularly in transportation, infrastructure, construction and site remediation (also energy, mining, forestry, etc.)
  • Professional accreditation (or eligibility to attain) such as Professional Geoscientist or Engineer (P.Geo./P.Eng), Environmental Professional (EP) considered an asset.
  • Project management skills including experience in the major phases of project planning
  • Excellent working knowledge of Federal and Provincial environmental laws and regulations
  • Strong experience completing Phase I, II and III Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), coordinating risk assessments and remedial planning
  • Experience working on sustainability-related projects/initiatives considered an asset
  • Working knowledge and experience with ArcGIS mapping software considered an asset
  • Training, knowledge and/or certification in multiple technical, environmental fields considered an asset, including geosciences, hydrology, terrestrial/aquatic ecology, fish and wildlife, construction best practices, etc.
  • Experience working safely and effectively in northern/remote settings, on construction sites and around large machinery, and through sometimes difficult field conditions (e.g., inclement weather, insects, difficult terrain, around water, etc.)
  • Experience using a wide range of field gear and scientific sampling equipment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work both as a team member and individually with little supervision
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • High attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Must possess a valid G driver\xe2\x80\x99s license
