Position: Environmental Inspector
Reports to: Project Manager(s)

Paragon is currently seeking an Environmental Inspector for pipeline construction and reclamation to join our team. Title and compensation will be commensurate with experience. POSITION SUMMARY: Paragon provides conservation and reclamation planning and monitoring services to many major pipeline projects, across much of our beautiful country.
Environmental Inspectors are responsible for supporting client reclamation programs, including soil salvage, soil placement, reclamation monitoring and compliance with regulatory commitments. Key responsibilities include monitoring and documenting day-to-day construction activities, providing feedback and recommendations to the construction management team to ensure compliance with environmental commitments and regulations, supporting the project management team, preparing daily and monthly field reports, and providing input to regulatory submissions. Successful candidates will gain a thorough understanding of the pipeline regulatory environment and industrial operations, in addition to contributing to the successful reclamation of major industrial projects. These positions are predominantly field-based and include shift-work of various durations. The construction season is busy, but there are usually ample opportunities to travel or simply relax between projects.RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Monitor day-to-day construction activities (e.g. clearing, vegetation control, watercourse crossing, erosion and sediment control, seeding)
• Verify project construction work meets environmental best practices, environmental commitments, regulatory permits/approvals, and environmental legislation (e.g. Environmental Protection Plan, Environmental Management Plan, Codes of Practice, work permits, contract documents) and develop recommendations to resolve non-conformances
• Interact with Contractor construction management team on a daily basis to proactively address issue and overcome challenges
• Build and maintain positive client relationships focused on providing top quality service
• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports as required
• Other responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: data management through the collection, entry, synthesis and reporting phases; preparing various formats of field reports; ground disturbance preparation; hazard assessment; accurate completion of chain-of-custody forms and delivery to the lab when needed
• Lead and/or facilitate kick off, progress, environmental, safety, quality, socioeconomic, and other meetings
• Assisting Project Managers with various tasks as they arise
• Exercising good judgment in situations that are not covered by policies and procedures
• Preparing regular, timely and accurate timesheets, expense reports and other relevant documentation
• Assisting with equipment maintenance and safety

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: You must have the following attributes:

• Bachelor or graduate degree in biology, soil science, or other related disciplines from a recognized university or college or a combination of experience and education
• Eligibility to register with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA) an asset
• Strong commitment to client satisfaction and a working knowledge of the oil and gas industry
• Field experience required
• Willingness to work 12-hour days and travel
• An absolute, genuine dedication to working safely
• Ability to work productively independently as well as in a team setting
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an affinity for working respectfully with colleagues, contractors, and clients
• Results-oriented and efficient, with excellent problem-solving skills
• Knowledge of and experience with computers and PC software, especially Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook (at least an intermediate level of proficiency)
• Well organized and ability to maintain accurate and up to date field information
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Tech-savvy enough that advanced GPS and tablets do not scare you
• Valid Class 5 Driver's License, with a clean drivers abstract (or darn close to it)
• Good physical condition with the ability to travel and work in remote settings under adverse conditions

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Understanding of agricultural practices
• Demonstrated competence in conflict management
• Knowledge of environmental legislation as it relates to Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario an asset
• Knowledge in soil handling methods, erosion and sediment control methods, water crossings (trenched and trenchless) and reclamation
• Experience with construction monitoring
• Experience with pre-disturbance soil survey and/or post-reclamation assessments
• Plant identification skills
• Safety Certificates: First Aid, Advanced driver training, GDII, H2S, OSSA, CSTS, PCST, WHMIS, Bear Aware, ATV/UTV
