The Environmental Services Team of the Department of Public Works plays a pivotal role in ensuring new and existing infrastructure in our Province is sustainably developed with minimal risk to our environment.
We have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Engineer, perfect for a person who has developed technical skills in the planning and execution of infrastructure projects, such as highway and building construction/maintenance.
About Our Opportunity
As the Environmental Engineer, you are responsible for the planning, coordination and administration of complex environmental projects such as decommissioning sites of former provincial buildings, improving environmental performance of our operating highway bases, and providing engineering support to either highway or building maintenance and construction projects.
Primary Accountabilities
The Environmental Engineer will manage contaminated sites through the provincial regulatory process and will provide technical expertise related to regulated building materials for the purpose of renovation or deconstruction of provincial infrastructure. You will also be responsible for leading the environmental assessment, screening or permitting (as required) of major projects such as the construction of highways or other significant provincial infrastructure. You will contribute to the development and maintenance of environmental design policies and standards. You will also be responsible for coordinating research and analysis related to environmental engineering technologies and procedures as they relate to highway and infrastructure construction, an essential part of your role.
You review and approve technical reports and drawings and contribute summaries and briefings to senior executives.
You will provide environmental engineering and design advice while assisting Departmental staff and other government agencies and represent Environmental Services on various committees and design teams. You will provide support to all areas of the province with the unique challenges that arise, while achieving the Department\'s objectives.
Qualifications and Experience
A bachelors\' degree in Engineering from an accredited engineering institution is required. You must be (or meet the requirements to be) actively registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with Engineers Nova Scotia (ENS).
You are comfortable in both office and field environments and possess a comprehensive knowledge of environmental and health and safety regulations, industry practices and safe work practices.
