Are you ready to be a leader in building a safer, smarter City of Edmonton? The Parks and Roads Services Branch is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineering Technologist III to step into a senior technical and supervisory role within our vital Traffic Operations section.
This isn't just a technical role; you'll be on the front lines, leading technical staff and ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of our entire road network. The Engineering Technologist III is a senior technical role reporting to the Traffic Signals & Street Lighting Senior Operations Engineer. You will lead a team of technical field staff responsible for ensuring all traffic signal and street lighting assets are installed and operate according to established standards. The Traffic Signal & Street Light Operations team handles design work for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices and operational traffic signal and lighting projects as well as manages contractors during construction, conducts inspections, reviews construction plans and accepts assets into operations. A key focus is supporting the operations and maintenance programs for our extensive traffic control and secondary electrical systems.

What will you do?
Manage and administer maintenance repair programs (System Damage), in response to urgent or priority situations where assets are damaged due to motor vehicle accidents or other unplanned circumstances
Coordinate requests from third parties for temporary moves or minor modifications to signals and street lighting assets
Represent Traffic Signal and Street Light Operations in meetings with external agencies or departments concerning operations or maintenance
Assist in maintaining and updating operational guidelines, standards, and specifications
Research products and technology, recommending improvements to business processes, materials, and equipment
Oversee the quality control of drafting and design for traffic signals and traffic control device civil/electrical layouts for construction
Provide project management, including reviewing project scheduling with internal groups and community partners
Supervise construction inspection and the acceptance of assets in line with established guidelines and procedures
Manage electrical services contractors to ensure installations, maintenance, and repairs meet specifications
Coordinate and implementation of special projects
Directly supervise, coordinate, train, and direct the efforts of technical staff, including engineering technologists
Manage the recruitment, coaching, and performance monitoring of staff, including completing performance appraisals and making disciplinary recommendations to the supervisor
Develop and communicate job standards, policies, procedures, training programs, and safety practices to the team
Ensure staff compliance with occupational health and safety and environmental regulations
Develop and conduct hazard assessments and inspections
Work with frontline staff with regard to safety concerns to address issues
Qualifications
:Completion of a two (2) year diploma in an appropriate (Electrical, Civil, Material; or similar) Engineering Technologist program
Applicant(s) must be eligible to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET
Minimum eight (8) years progressively responsible experience in streetlight construction and operations
Demonstrated supervisory skills and experience
Skills required for success:
Extensive technical knowledge of best practices, standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment related to the operational area
Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, City of Edmonton Design and Construction Standards, and the EPCOR Customer Connection Guide
Demonstrated experience in traffic signals, street lighting design, and installation
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to research, compile information, and prepare professional reports and responses
Proven ability to utilize software for the efficient completion of reports, records, and other documentation
Exceptional problem-solving skills, including creative thinking, critical thinking, complex problem solving, and crisis management
Interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, including exercising good tact and sound judgment when dealing with difficult situations and people
Strong supervisory and leadership skills, including the ability to effectively coach, motivate, and manage team performance
Self-management skills, including the ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and work with minimum supervision

Conditions of employment:
Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher
Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Work Environment:
Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
