Competition # : 45717Department: Natural ResourcesLocation: HALIFAXType of Employment: StudentUnion Status: Exclusion - Non Union - NSPGClosing Date: 10-Apr-25 (Applications are accepted until 11:59 PM Atlantic Time)About UsThe Geoscience and Mines Branch of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, interprets and reports on mineral resource and environmental geoscience issues, and promotes mineral development opportunities to achieve optimum economic, social, and environmental value from the sector.Within the Branch, the Mineral Management Division includes, amongst others, a team of mine engineers, geologists, and technicians largely responsible for delivering administrative and regulatory oversight of the mineral resource sector, promoting public safety around abandoned mines, advising government and working with stakeholders of the mineral resource sector to support and facilitate responsible mineral resource management consistent with sustainable development.About Our OpportunityAn Engineering Student / Field Assistant is required to work with the Mineral Development and Policy Section engineering group. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be exposed to the different areas of government oversight on the mineral resource sector. Most of the time, this position will be part of a two-person team that is responsible to locate and assess abandoned mine openings across the province. This work will involve the review of historical mining records on file with the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables to locate mine openings, development of a base map for field activities, and then to locate, catalogue and assess mine openings in the field under the supervision of the field leader.The position will be responsible for cataloguing and scanning historical documents and mine plans and managing digital data. The Engineering Student will also be assigned various mineral development, engineering and/or geological projects, as they arise. The student's time will split between the office and field.Qualifications and ExperienceApplicants must have completed their third year of engineering undergraduate studies with a major in any of the following disciplines:

• Natural Resources (Mining, Mineral Resources, Forestryxe2x80xa6)

• Environmental

• Civil

• Geotechnical

As the Engineering Student position will spend time in the field, successful candidates must be comfortable undertaking outdoor work of a physical nature and be open to learning new field skills. Safety training will be provided before field work begins.The following skills would be considered an asset for this position:

• GPS, map, and compass reading skills.

• Experience with mapping and engineering software such as GIS and AutoCAD.

• An awareness and knowledge of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act.

• The ability to carry heavy loads and walk long distances over rough terrain.

• A basic understanding of the hazards associated with abandoned mine sites.

• General knowledge of the mineral resources sector within the Province of Nova Scotia.

• First-Aid Certification.
