Our Team: The Waste Management Division is comprised of a diverse and dedicated group of employees that ensure a wide variety of programs, infrastructure and services related to the collection, disposal, recycling, composting and reduction of waste are developed and maintained in an effective and efficient manner.
We are currently looking for a full time Engineering Intern, who is passionate about the environment and willing to work collaboratively with a team on landfill related projects and ensure operation of environmental control systems within a regulatory compliance framework. The Opportunity: As Engineering Intern (Waste Management) you will plan, design, manage and authorize the provision of engineering services in the Division for small waste management capital and asset management projects. You will have the opportunity to establish project guidelines and scope for small projects as well as work on components of larger projects, under the supervision and direction of senior staff. You will also operate environmental control systems under direction of senior staff.
Apply your Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: You will perform work under the general supervision of a Professional Engineer and have the opportunity to work on project teams for small waste management capital projects and help to establish project scope and requirements.
You will help develop and manage components of schedules and budgets (up to multi-million), under supervision of supervisor/senior staff, and for approval from same.
You will provide support to senior staff on projects involving property transactions, access agreements and approvals, involving multiple stakeholders.
You will direct technical staff on planning and capital projects and in preparing contract drawings, assign work to clerical, survey, drafting and Facilities staff on in-house projects and provide technical direction to construction inspectors and survey crews. You will provide direction, guidance, and performance evaluation to consulting engineers, with input into their hiring and dismissal.
You will administer contracts, interpret documents with contractors and authorize payments, changes, and extra work. You will negotiate claims, disputes, and payments, in under supervision of senior staff.
You will develop contracts and procure goods and services, manage, and negotiates work plans and budgets with consultants.
You will have the opportunity to visit construction sites to assess quality and progress of work, and ensure testing, inspections and contract work is completed per contract documents and legislation.
You will provide support to senior staff at public meetings and consultations and respond to questions from stakeholders related to established processes.
You will manage the operation of environmental control systems for groundwater extraction, landfill gas, leachate, and surface water management under the general supervision of senior staff.
You will manage data collection and records maintenance to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
You will manage and monitor asset management and preventative maintenance activities for infrastructure and control systems.
You will provide input for the ten-year capital program and operating budgets, monitor actual versus forecast expenditures, and oversees purchase orders and payments.
You will draft technical reports for senior staff review/approval and draft Committee and Council reports for senior staff review.
You will provide support to senior staff on projects involving multiple stakeholders.
You will provide information and negotiate project requirements with equipment suppliers, government agencies, area municipalities, consultants, contractors, utility companies, conservation authorities and developers under the general supervision of senior staff.
You will work in collaboration with regional staff, including Design & Construction, IT, Legal Services, Facilities, Procurement and Finance to deliver projects and resolve issues.
You will support studies and research initiatives by collecting and compiling data from academic institutions, with the opportunity to liaise with researchers.
Performs related duties as required.
Apply Your Experience at the Region of Waterloo: Must be registered or eligible for registration as an engineering intern with the PEO, or actively pursuing a Limited License in an applicable area of practice with the PEO. Engineer/Senior Engineer: Must be licensed and in good standing as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or be a member in good standing holding a Limited License in the area of practice(s), issued by the PEO. For those trained outside of Canada, equivalency will be determined by the PEO. Participates in activities to maintain professional license.
Knowledge of and ability to comply with corporate policies and procedures, related legislation (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Lien Act, Environmental Protection Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Waste Free Ontario Act, Technical Standards and Safety Act), Ontario Provincial Standards, Canadian Standards, Ministry guidelines, contract law, relevant codes, and engineering standards.
Ability to work independently on concurrent projects (consulting with senior staff/supervisor as applicable); review decisions/problems with Regional/political sensitivity with management; explore project and operational alternatives individually/as part of a project team; and make recommendations on improvements to existing contract and engineering and operational standards and procedures.
Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office, computer aided design, specialized systems, and computer models.
Communication, negotiation, and human relation skills to direct and guide contractors, consultants and staff; coordinate and negotiate project requirements; prepare and present written and visual materials for public drop-in centres, open houses and formal public meetings according to the EA approval process and Act; conduct presentations to Committees, area municipalities and Councils; hold open houses and formal meetings for the media and public; respond to public inquiries; and participate as an effective team member.
Ability to write project correspondence, reports, contracts, agreements and standard operating procedures for contractors, consultants, committees, Regional and area municipal Councils, staff, media, and the public where applicable. Ability to read and interpret policy and procedure manuals, engineering and technical journals, design specifications, contracts, reports, legal documents, and memos.
Ability to adjust hours to attend open houses and deal with emergencies.
Must have a valid Class G driver?s license (or G2 with 3 years of driving experience) and acceptable driving record to operate regional vehicles. Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
Ability to participate in an official stand-by/on-call rotation to respond to legislated or time sensitive demands beyond regularly scheduled work hours.
