We are currently looking for a Distribution Planning Engineer to join our System Planning team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Senior Distribution Planning Engineer, you all aspects of distribution planning, including system studies related to generation interconnections, large load connections, reliability studies, and load growth. The Distribution Planning Engineer will be responsible for becoming an expert in CYME distribution analysis software and help develop and maintain network and load models. Analysis provided by the Distribution Planning Engineer will inform operational, capital, and regulatory decisions.

As Distribution Planning Engineer you will:

  • Perform Preliminary Assessments and System Impact Studies for large loads and distributed generation
  • Develop annual system load snapshot and feeder assessment reports
  • Perform area planning studies requested by regional engineering and resulting from load growth and asset risk metrics
  • Perform system fault level calculations and device co-ordination as required for distribution protection analysis
  • Update and improve CYME software database using GIS and equipment data
  • Leverage data from AMI, MV90, PI and GE APM using tools such as PI Vision, PI Datalink, Tableau and Excel
  • Work closely regional engineering and capital execution groups to develop planning recommendations and timelines
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, regulations, codes, and standards
  • Contribute to a work environment based on mutual trust and respect while carrying out all work in a safe and effective manner
You will be responsible for personal safety, that of co-workers, and those under your direction by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environment management system processes and initiatives.

What skills will make you successful?

The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Electrical Engineering and experience in electrical utility / industry medium voltage applications. You must be, or eligible to be, a professional member of Engineers Nova Scotia within 6 months of starting the position. A valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license is required.

The ideal candidate will be proficient in using a variety of software such as CYME, PI, Word, Excel and Tableau. The distribution system is faced with many new challenges related to renewable generation and the electrification of heating and transportation. The distribution planning department is expected to leverage new data sources to adapt existing methods of analysis to meet these challenges.

Strong communication skills are required to collaborate within System Planning and other departments to ensure that system studies are comprehensive and accurate. Study recommendations must be communicated effectively. Building relationships and credibility is a key aspect of this role.

Strong technical writing skills are required, as reports are integral to this position. You must be able to function effectively in a team environment, but also be able to work independently. You must be a self-starter with proven organizational and analytical skills with established skills in managing multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously. You must demonstrate your commitment to personal development.

Some travel is required. You must also be available to support emergency power restoration work in an assigned storm role which may be different from your normal position.
