Role Summary Reporting to the Director, Energy and Sustainability, the primary responsibility of the Energy Specialist is to oversee Pure Industrial?s utility data management and provide energy efficiency-related guidance for both existing properties and new construction projects. The Energy Specialist is also responsible for managing energy and water conservation and decarbonization projects from identification to implementation. This position works across a wide variety of functional areas and teams including departmental leads, external advisors, consultants, vendors, and other third parties to ensure successful tracking, reporting, and execution of all projects. The successful candidate will have five or more years of energy and sustainability experience within Commercial Real Estate. A professional designation (Professional Engineer, Certified engineering technician/technologist, Certified Energy Manager) is considered an asset. The ideal candidate will also have advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, proficiency in project management, and a proven ability to develop practical and creative solutions. Core Responsibilities The Energy Specialist is a subject matter expert in energy data analysis and reporting. This includes utility analysis, spend and variance reporting, rates analysis, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions calculations, etc. The successful candidate is also responsible for supporting energy, water, and decarbonization projects and providing technical input. The minimum duties are expressed below.
Reporting & Analysis
  • Monitor and analyze energy and water data to find opportunities for improvement and produce reports that highlight where additional emphasis and focus are needed.
  • Analyze utility data using statistical analysis methods to identify trends, energy outliers, or anomalies.
  • Maintain an energy tracking and monitoring database for the portfolio that captures current energy consumption data where available, and benchmarking.
  • Implement measurement and verification strategies, including the reporting of key performance indicators and benchmarks for internal and external reporting needs.
  • Review, develop and implement improvements to reporting and analytical processes.
  • Contribute to reports/updates, including GRESB, that highlight our progress and performance against approved goals and commitments.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining the annual budget for energy and sustainability projects across the portfolio.
  • Create visually appealing data analysis that helps senior leaders focus on the critical trends and stories requiring additional intervention.
  • Engage and communicate with internal and external program stakeholder groups.
Energy & Sustainability
  • Identify, assess, prioritize, and recommend energy-saving opportunities and GHG reduction projects. This includes the preparation of business cases to justify capital expenditure.
  • Maintain knowledge and outlook of utility market rates and cost drivers to support business cases.
  • Communicate with the property management team regarding unusual increases in energy or water consumption trends and works as a team to investigate and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Work with customer experience, leasing, and property management teams to promote energy-saving opportunities to Pure?s tenants.
  • Evaluate new technologies for the purpose of energy efficiency, electrification, renewable energy, and decarbonization programs and policies.
  • Prepare detailed comprehensive business case studies and environmental impact reports to support new technology projects.
  • Work with the capital projects team, as the subject matter expert, for the coordination and implementation of energy-saving and decarbonization projects, including the planning, implementation, and final verification of projects.
  • Manage/coordinate the application process for energy rebates, incentives, and grants, as applicable.
Required Skills and Experience
  • A bachelor?s degree in science, engineering, or a related field; or a Professional designation such as Certified Engineering Technician/Technologist, Certified Energy Manager; and
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in energy and sustainability analytics, along with working knowledge of utility data.
  • Experience in energy performance benchmarking using industry tools, such as Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
  • Experience with analyzing large datasets and performing regression analysis using weather data using industry software, such as RETScreen Expert.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications along with the ability to quickly learn data analytic tools.
  • Adept at creating accurate and succinct project correspondence and reports.
  • Strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic thinker and agile problem solver.
  • A data-driven approach to understanding the environment and driving for results.
  • Highly organized and able to work independently.
  • Fluency in English is a requirement, fluency in French would be an asset.
  • This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid driver's license.

Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation
  • Certified Measurement & Verification Professional, an asset
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), an asset
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) is an asset
