The Burnaby School District is the fourth largest in BC. The District operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, including a range of district and provincial resource programs. Reporting to the Energy & Sustainability Manager, the Energy Specialist functions as part of the Burnaby School District Energy Management & Sustainability Team and is involved with all aspects of energy conservation, greenhouse gas accounting, and sustainability within Burnaby School District. The Energy Specialist will assist the Energy & Sustainability Manager to achieve, promote, and coordinate energy saving initiatives, and will work closely with all Facilities Services Managers, school administrators and District managers and administrators.
The Energy Specialist will:
Tracks, analyzes, and reports utility consumption (electricity, natural gas, propane, and water/sewer); ensures these utilities are billed correctly, identifies any abnormalities, and communicates issues to involved parties.
Interact with various stakeholders, including school administration, Facilities Team, and FortisBC staff, to coordinate power outages.
Acts as the administrator user of the District\xe2\x80\x99s account on the Clean Government Reporting Tool (CGRT); collects and reports data on the District\xe2\x80\x99s Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas emissions.
Ensures Facilities Team, including Director, Managers, and Operational staff, are fully aware of all conservation and energy management incentive and education programs offered by FortisBC.
Works with Facilities Team to conduct periodic inventories of natural gas-fired equipment to determine eligible projects for FortisBC incentives, in coordination with the District\xe2\x80\x99s Long-Range Facilities Plan and end of operational life replacements.
Explores and develops business cases around natural gas-related projects; brings forward natural gas-related projects to internal management for capital program support and funding approval.
Executes natural gas projects and ensures that FortisBC programs are applied for, utilized where applicable, and accurately tracked internally and externally.
Assists the Energy & Sustainability Manager to:
Implement, track, and monitor the District\xe2\x80\x99s Sustainability Strategic Plan (SSP);
Prepare the annual Climate Change Accountability Report (CCAR);
Develop, implement, track, monitor, and update the Strategic Energy Management Plan (SEMP) and SEMP targets; and
Monitor and track EV charging station usage, low carbon fuel standard credits, and repairs.
The ideal candidate will have:
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to BCIT SEMAC (Sustainable Energy Management Advanced Certificate), BCIT Building Controls and Energy Management Advanced Certificate, UBC Masters in Clean Energy: Completion of the Demand-Side Energy Efficiency & Conservation course, Douglas College Building Energy and Resource Management program certificate, Langara Energy Management Certificate, Proof of passing the Certified Energy Manager exam under the Canadian Institute for Energy Training.
Knowledge of building mechanical and electrical systems including broad knowledge of Building Automation Systems.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with energy efficient technology related to lighting systems, HVAC systems, cooling plant equipment, heating plant equipment and control systems.
Familiarity and knowledge of energy efficient technologies.
Demonstrates knowledge of project management principles and methodologies and experience with capital and energy projects.
Knowledge and experience in project management, contract management, budget development, business case development, financial controls and analysis.
Thorough understanding of available resources for projects and applicable stakeholder groups.
Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to ensure information is communicated appropriately .
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and lead, facilitate and gain consensus with various stakeholders and teams.
