The Burnaby School District is on the traditional territory of the Coast Salish Nations of Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish.

The Burnaby School District is the fourth largest in BC. The District operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, including a range of district and provincial resource programs. The District supports and provides learning to 25,000 Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) students and to more than 6,000 adult learners through our established Burnaby Community & Continuing Education program. The Manager of Energy and Sustainability functions as part of the Business Services department. This role would provide oversight of the district\xe2\x80\x99s progress on Strategic Sustainability Plan (SSP) initiatives and play a key function in ensuring that the district meets its sustainability and energy conversation goals. The Manager of Energy & Sustainability would be primarily responsible for working collaboratively with staff to achieve, promote, and coordinate energy consumption saving initiatives throughout the District and supporting the sustainability team by leveraging opportunities to bridge educational and business services, and sustainability project management support. This role would work directly with the various working groups and be responsible for ensuring that energy and sustainability values and principles are consistently applied across the various working groups (students, teachers, administrators) and departmental areas, as well as overseeing a portfolio of key projects. The Manager of Energy & Sustainability is the primary contact for BC Hydro and Fortis Gas funding and initiatives.

A Manager of Energy and Sustainability in Burnaby:
Provide oversight of the district\xe2\x80\x99s progress on the strategic sustainability plan (SSP) and energy initiatives and be key in ensuring that the District meets its goals;

Support the Burnaby Youth Sustainability Network annual program initiatives;

Accountable for overseeing a portfolio of key energy and sustainability projects;

Researches and identifies energy consumption projects and seeks out funding resources to implement projects that benefit the District (e.g. hydro; water; DDC and lighting; heading control systems);

Contribute to the development and implementation of the Long-Range Facility Plan pertaining to SSP strategies;

Prepares and submits progress reports related to energy and sustainability

Bridge and elevate energy and sustainability initiatives between business services and education/curriculum;

Provide leadership, and deliver strategic recommendations around energy and sustainment policies as well as corporate and broader climate action;

Create a communication framework, in partnership with Communications, around SSP objectives with a cohesive message around sustainability to communicate both internally and outward to the community;

Support engagement with community partners and students and manage partnership agreements with key stakeholders, and participates and chairs community planning tables and forums;

Manages the hiring, performance management, work assignment, training, and initiates corrective or disciplinary action, and Liaises with Human Resources and Health & Safety to ensure consistent interpretation of the collective agreement and WorkSafeBC regulations;

Develops key performance measures and metrics;

Responds to school facility emergencies or safety related issues; and

Performs other responsibilities as required

Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Environmental Sciences, Sustainability, Resource Management, or a related field, Certified Energy Manager designation (asset), Sustainable Energy Management credentials, Project Management Professional (PMP); Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP); or Equivalent combinations of education, training and experience may be considered;

5 \xe2\x80\x93 7 years direct experience in a related field with experience with financial analysis and budget management experience;

Good knowledge with HVAC, mechanical, electrical and building management systems

Familiarity and knowledge of energy efficient technologies and associated incentive or grant programs; and an ability to develop complex and compelling business cases;

Excellent written and verbal communication, collaboration, interpersonal and presentation skills are essential;

Proficiency with software applications including the Microsoft Office suite;

Strong leadership abilities, demonstrated ability to balance priorities, exercise sound judgement, and well-developed political acumen;

Demonstrate skills in community environment, including the ability to participate and lead school and student groups and work cooperatively with parents, professionals, and community service agencies;

Exemplary ability to collaborate and work as a member of diverse teams/stakeholders, and take initiative, including the district energy management team;

Strong knowledge of project management principles and methodologies; capital and energy projects; contract management, budget development, business case development, financial controls and analysis; and

Valid BC driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and vehicle.
