POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Council Secretariat, the Employment Lawyer is responsible for all matters concerning the workplace and the legal rights of both employer and employees. This is a part-time position that requires the applicant to be set up to work from home. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia
  • Indigenous Intercultural Competency Training
  • Trauma Informed Lawyering Training
  • Minimum of 8 years experience in a legal, local government/public administration and corporate setting
  • Extensive knowledge of federal laws and regulations
  • High-level awareness and knowledge of Indigenous/corporate law, structures of various levels of government and First Nation Self-governance
REQUIREMENTS
  • Criminal Record Check with results acceptable to WFN
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES
  • Support the full scope of legal work, including interpretation, amendment and implementation of employment law, policies and procedures
  • Stay abreast of all Indigenous operational employment matters, including past WFN cases/documents and work with General Legal Counsel and the Human Resources Director or designate, on litigation cases related to legal liabilities or potential legal liabilities on behalf of WFN. This includes negotiations processes, court representation, and drafting/preparing claims
  • Advise on WFN-critical legal, compliance, competitive and risk-balancing issues, including employee mis/conduct, fraud/financial crime, and legal risks arising from daily operations ranging from contractual to intellectual incidences
  • Upon request, support improvement of standard form agreements, contracts or other legal documentation and legal processes within WFN
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned by the Council Secretariat
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with WFN policies, standards and procedures, and as directed by the Council Secretariat
  • Attend at WFN membership meetings as required to provide related information and advice to Chief and Council, the Director of Operations, the Council Secretariat, and WFN Members

  • Strong understanding of Indigenous history, culture and community
  • Understanding of First Nation Self-Government, WFNs Constitution, and its laws
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with policy and administrative bodies.
