Course Number and Title: FAH337H1S - Rivalry, Imitation and Envy in Italian Renaissance Art

Course Description: This course examines works in different art media, including painting, sculture and prints, produced from 1400 to 1600, discussing how artistic practice of imitation and emulation stimulated the development of individual styles. In addition, this course addresses notions of disruptive rivalry, and the representation of slander and envy.

Estimated Course Enrolment: 100 students

Estimated TA Support: 200 hours

Class Schedule: Wednesdays 3-5 pm.

This course is currently designated to meet in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery mode may change as determined by the Faculty or Department.

Sessional Dates of Appointment: January 1, 2024 to April 30, 2024; Final Assessment period April 10-30, 2024. Please note: This position includes the completion of any course work and marking not finished by December 31, 2023.

Salary:

$9,457.89 for Sessional Lecturer I; $9,930.79 for Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term;

$10,121.76 for Sessional Lecturer II; $10,326.61 for Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term

$10,362.76 for Sessional Lecturer III; $10,570.01 for Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term

These rates include vacation pay

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Art History, preferably in Early Modern and Baroque European art; if the PhD is in progress, the qualifying exam must already have been passed. Demonstrated skill in teaching, writing, and communication in the history of art are required.

Preferred Qualifications: Previous teaching experience and/or tutorial leadership in this or a similar course at the university level is preferred. Also preferred is experience with management and delivery of courses using University of Toronto or similar online systems (e.g., Quercus, Canvas-based technologies, Microsoft Teams, etc.).

Description of Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University-credit course, including: developing and publishing the syllabus and marking scheme through Quercus; preparing and delivering lectures and/or leading classroom discussions during the 4 contact hours each week; TA supervision (if applicable), preparing relevant assignments for student assessment, and (if applicable) setting and invigilating term tests and the final assessment; marking of student work and reporting final grades to the university; and maintaining office hours for academic counselling of students.
