POSITION OVERVIEW:




Kwantlen Polytechnic University's English Language Studies (ELS) department offers a dynamic teaching environment with opportunities to work in partnership with experienced professionals and to participate in university life. The ELS program serves a diverse domestic and international population of English language learners. The ELS department is seeking applicants to add to their Qualified ELS Faculty List for the Course ELST1010 - Introduction to Professional Communication for Internationally Educated Nurses (PCIEN).


PCIEN is a course for domestic learners who have occupational certification as an RN, LPN or RPN from countries outside of Canada. The goal of the course is to increase participants' language skills to be successful on competency exams, language proficiency tests, and applying for licensures or entry into bridging or refresher programs in Canada. Course participants learn practical communication strategies and theoretical knowledge that will enhance their communication skills and cultural competence for British Columbian health care settings. Activities include participating in filmed roleplays using standardized patients, giving and receiving feedback, practicing effective team communications, listening to and analyzing patient interactions, and completing written assignments. The ELS instructor will be collaborating with a Healthcare Workplace Facilitator (R.N.), who provides the clinical perspective to the class.


This course is a 6-credit course and may be offered out of Richmond, Langley or Surrey campuses.

QUALIFICATIONS:



Master's degree in TESOL or related discipline (completed or in progress) TESL training of 100 or more hours methodology, including a supervised practicum of 20 hours or more English native-like fluency in both spoken and written language Minimum two years teaching a variety of ELT, EAP, and ESP courses to adults at the advanced level Training in interpersonal communication skills or equivalent Experience teaching professional communication skills to internationally educated health professionals/Nurses A combination of experience, training, and education will be considered


Preference will be given to applicants who have:

Experience and/or knowledge of e-learning (MOODLE) Experience and/or knowledge of assessment tools BC TEAL/TESL Canada certification Experience teaching in a university environment Experience team teaching

SALARY INFORMATION:



Placement on the salary scale will be dependent on level of education and relevant teaching experience. Advancement up the pay scale is based on FTE and employment status.
