Position Overview:

The English Language Program at The University of Winnipeg is seeking level 1-5 English instructors as part of the Short-Term Intensive Programs.

Explore is a five-week intensive English-immersion bursary program offered to Canadian students in order to learn and practice their second official language. The June/July Intensive Program hosts international students for a five-week intensive English-immersion course.

This posting will be used to hire for Spring & Summer Intensive sessions based on student enrollment.

Responsibilities:

  • Course preparation and outline in accordance with Program requirements
  • Lesson / lecture preparation
  • Attendance management
  • Teaching
  • Student contact including providing assessment and constructive feedback to students
  • Participation in placement testing, staff meetings, orientations and graduation ceremonies
  • Preparation and creation of assessments
  • Marking and grading
  • Other duties as assigned
Education and Qualifications:
  • TESL or CELTA required
  • Undergraduate degree required
  • Levels 1 and 2- Minimum 1 year experience teaching EAL to adult learners at beginner to intermediate levels
  • Levels 1 and 2- Minimum 1 year experience teaching EAL multi-level vocabulary acquisition, spoken and written grammar and reading and writing strategies at the beginner to intermediate levels
  • Levels 3, 4 and 5- Minimum 1 year experience teaching EAL to adult learners at intermediate to advanced levels
  • Levels 3, 4 and 5- Minimum 1 year experience teaching EAL multi-level vocabulary acquisition, spoken and written grammar and reading and writing strategies at the intermediate to advanced levels
  • Knowledge of creating and implementing needs assessments
  • Experience in developing and delivering effective lesson plans using all four skill areas
  • Knowledge and experience implementing various classroom management techniques
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
  • Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience using online teaching platforms considered an asset
