Job Summary

The Department of Computer Science, founded in the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1980, is one of the three departments in the Faculty of Engineering and offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Currently, the department experiences an increased enrollment in its undergraduate degrees and service courses.

Reporting to the Senior Programmer/Analyst, the Electronics Technician maintains, repairs and modifies existing computer and electronic equipment to support teaching, research, and administration in the department, and fulfills other duties as required. With a complement of about 30 regular faculty members, 14 support staff, more than 500 computers including desktop and server class machines, printers, networking equipment, mass storage systems, and various other electronic equipment, this is both an exciting and challenging position.

The Electronics Technician provides guidance and leadership to department members on their electronic equipment purchases, and utilizes the equipment in the electronics shop to maintain, repair, and configure the varied equipment required by the department. In addition to the computers and networking equipment in the 10 undergraduate labs, the Electronics Technician will also inspect and maintain the equipment security system as well as audio visual equipment. While the Electronics Technician will work primarily in the Engineering/Computer Science (ECS) building on campus, regular visits across campus to the university's Enterprise Data Centre 2 (EDC2) will be required to service the department's rack mount server and mass storage equipment hosted there for the department.

This position has the responsibility to uphold and comply with the relevant sections of the UVic Information Security Standards.
