Job Description


The Ottawa International Airport Authority oversees the Airport as a whole and the Operations and Infrastructure team is accepting applications for Electricians. As part of this small but integral team, you will be responsible for installing, altering, repairing and maintaining electrical systems designed to provide heat, light, power, control, signal or fire alarms for all types of buildings, structures and premises.

When first hired you will work days Monday to Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., until you have obtained your RAIC (Airport Restricted Area Identification Card) and completed your training period. Then you will be required to work a shift rotation consisting of non-regular days and hours (mornings-4:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. / evenings 1:30 p.m. to midnight) rotations will include weekends and statutory holidays.

This position reports to the Supervisor of Electrical Maintenance

Essential functions:

  • Install, inspect, rebuild, repair, and maintain approach, obstruction, direction and other airfield lights, regulators and associated circuits in compliance with regulations and codes;
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain Programmable Logic Controller systems;
  • Maintain and inspect fire alarm systems;
  • Install, inspect, rebuild, repair, and maintain the airport interior and exterior lighting systems in compliance with regulations and codes;
  • Perform and carry out a complete maintenance program of high or low voltage on transformer stations and distribution lines;
  • Carry out, at regular intervals, visual and operating inspections of emergency supply systems, both interruptible and non-interruptible, to ensure that a supply of electrical power is available at all times;
  • Carry out maintenance and repair to air conditioning and heating systems\' electrical equipment;
  • Carry out inspections, repairs, and routine maintenance to baggage conveyor\'s and loading bridge\'s electrical systems;
  • Carry out maintenance, inspection, and repairs to electrically operated door gates;
  • Rebuild and clean fixtures, replace lamps, remove and replace ceiling tiles, and perform routine electrical maintenance; and
  • Provide input for proposed facility changes and participates in project/facility change meetings as required.
To succeed in this role you have to be able to do the following things:
  • You must be able to read electrical drawings (schematics).
  • They must be able to use test equipment i.e. meggers, multi-meters, etc.
  • The successful candidate must be able to modify or affect repairs to electrical supply and distribution systems, to rewire buildings, indoor and outdoor lighting systems, and airport airfield lighting systems while applying safe work practices at all times.
  • They must be able to work independently, yet collaboratively, with the Electrical Maintenance team.
  • The successful candidate must be able to assess priorities, show attention to detail, be flexible with respect to changing assignments and must have effective interpersonal skills.
These abilities, as well as a professional and positive attitude, will ensure success in building positive working relationships in a team environment.

Essential qualifications:
  • A secondary school diploma and a valid Ontario Electricians Certificate of Qualification or extensive training and experience in electrical maintenance to a level of a skill of journeyman proficiency and in the installation and repair of electrical equipment and systems plus a valid Ontario Electricians Certificate of Qualification and an Interprovincial Red Seal Licence.
  • Knowledge of electrical installations such as alarm systems, lighting systems, transformer stations, power distribution, and control panels.
  • Knowledge of algebra, simple shops mathematic electrical formulas and basic solid circuitry.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in electrical equipment; and
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English.
The following will be considered as assets:
  • Knowledge and experience with PLC systems programming, trouble shooting and maintenance; and
  • Bilingualism (English and French).
A Condition of Employment for this role is:
  • You must be in possession of a valid driver\'s licence (Class G or equivalent) along with a driver\'s abstract (issued within the last month).
  • Once hired you must successfully complete a security clearance check for an Airport Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC), and successfully pass examinations for both an Airport Vehicle Operator\'s Permit (AVOP) and a Restricted Radio Operator\'s Certificate.
  • You must be fully vaccinated (at least 2 doses) against Covid-19 and provide proof if asked.
  • A successful applicant who passes their final interview, must undertake an Alcohol and Drug Screening test.
