APEL Extrusions Limited is an independent extruder, finisher and fabricator of aluminum profiles servicing the commercial, residential and industrial markets of Western Canada. Situated in Calgary, Canada, APEL Extrusions occupies 110,000 square feet of modern manufacturing space employing approximately 110 people.

The Position:



The Electrical/PLC Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, troubleshooting, and optimizing industrial control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, servo systems, and other automation technologies. This role provides technical leadership for electrical and controls systems across the plant and supports maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient manufacturing of extruded aluminum products.

The Electrical/PLC Engineer collaborates closely with other engineers, skilled trades personnel, equipment OEMs, and plant leadership, and plays a critical role in both day?to?day troubleshooting and long?term improvement of equipment performance.

Main duties:



Technical Support & Troubleshooting



Provide day?to?day technical troubleshooting, problem-solving, and root-cause analysis for operations and maintenance teams. Diagnose and resolve issues with PLC programs, electrical hardware, instrumentation, and control wiring. Ensure immediate equipment functionality and support long-term reliability improvements.

PLC / HMI / Control System Development



Write, test, modify, and debug PLC programs for new equipment and system upgrades. Develop and maintain HMI/SCADA screens and operator interfaces. Implement equipment safety logic, interlocks, and risk?reduction improvements. Optimize existing automation programs for better performance, uptime, and reliability.

Engineering Design & Documentation



Prepare and maintain electrical drawings, I/O lists, control narratives, and system documentation. Document program changes, version control, and operating procedures. Control and update equipment drawings, program security, and specifications/spare parts.

Project & Equipment Support



Support installation, commissioning, and verification of industrial control panels and automation systems. Review and contribute to capital projects (capex), equipment modifications, and new installations. Lead and/or facilitate engineering risk assessments, value analysis, and repair/replace/redesign decisions. Manage contractor and OEM activities related to equipment repairs, upgrades, and commissioning. Travel may be required to support projects (10% or less)

Continuous Improvement



Develop engineering solutions to eliminate repetitive failures and improve equipment reliability. Track equipment downtime and failure frequency, implementing predictive and preventive maintenance strategies. Stay current with evolving PLC platforms, automation tools, and industry technologies. Ensure all systems meet regulatory, electrical, and safety standards.

Qualifications:



Required



Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline),

OR

licensed journeyman electrician with PLC certification. Demonstrated experience with PLC programming, troubleshooting, and controls engineering in an industrial environment.

Preferred



Progress toward Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensing or equivalent is an asset. Experience in heavy industrial, metals, or continuous process manufacturing. Familiarity with servo systems, robotics, VFDs, and industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, etc.). Knowledge of safety systems and applicable electrical/controls standards.
