Providing high precision battery testing services and equipment for the lithium-ion battery industry, NOVONIX conducts lithium-ion battery research and provides battery making and consulting services for lithium-ion battery businesses. Serving many of the world\'s largest automobile and battery manufacturers, NOVONIX technology is used to evaluate products for EV, energy storage, and consumer applications. Partnered with Meridia, NOVONIX is in search of an experienced Environmental, Health, Safety (EHS) Manager to join their team, working out of sites in Bedford and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Role Description

As the EHS Manager, you will be the leader of all safety functions at each site. You will conduct inspections and speak with production staff to identify opportunities for improvement, set objectives and create plans to act on, and ensure all documentation is handled appropriately. To promote the safety culture at NOVONIX, your passion for health and safety will inspire others to treat safety as the number one priority. Additionally, you will identify and assist in environmental projects with the goal of reducing waste.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Evaluating and monitoring health and safety hazards and developing strategies to control risks in the workplace
  • Engaging in the inspection of worksites, equipment, and facilities to ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations and those regulations related to the handling and storage of hazardous substances
  • Creating and implementing new safety programs while identifying and documenting areas of improvement
  • Chairing the OH&S Committee
  • Spearheading safety initiatives and driving change
  • Documenting all information pertinent to OH&S
  • Auditing safety programs
  • Defining areas of improvement pertaining to training requirements and participate in training for new and existing employees
  • Implementing new programs or processes in conjunction with the Manager of Operations in order to minimize risk to employees and the organization
  • Brokering information between external vendors/contractors and internal stakeholders
  • Meeting periodically with team leads to ascertain what new equipment and/or functionality is needed in the buildings and coordinating installation and start-up
  • Ensuring the calibration of systems in the most energy efficient way(s) that are compliant with all safety and security protocols
  • Develops, implements and monitors company safety programs and policies.
  • Ensures compliance with government health and safety regulations.
  • Conducts Emergency Response Team (ERT) and other employee training in emergency response, life safety, industrial hygiene, and chemical and fire hazards.
  • Responds to emergencies, incidents and accidents; investigates causes and recommends corrective actions.
  • Conducts safety surveys to identify and mitigate occupational hazards.
  • Completes required federal, provincial and local government reports relating to safety.
Your Qualifications

With experience in EHS, you have shown an ability to create strategies and programs that are effective in increasing overall safety. You are able to spot opportunities for improvement, and conduct the planning and implementation required for new procedures and processes. You have a passion for EHS, and you are keen to develop preventative and proactive ways to address safety issues. Excellent communication skills allow you to run effective meetings, lead impactful conversations, gain buy-in and create important correspondence. Furthermore, your problem-solving abilities are exceptional, along with your attention to detail and organizational skills.

Your qualifications include:
  • Minimum of 3 years\' experience in an EHS role
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize, based on the needs of the business
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, strong ability with Microsoft Excel/Office tools
  • Very strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to display sensitivity, managing expectations and diplomacy with internal and external contacts
  • Excellent communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and ability to establish rapport with suppliers and employees alike
  • Keen eye for process improvement
  • Can work well in a fast-paced field, high flexibility as competing priorities depending on the current departmental needs
  • Demonstrated discretion and sound judgement in the handling of confidential information
