Educational Program Designer

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Educational Program Designer supports the mission of the Division of Continuing Medical Education, which is to engage with healthcare professionals to enhance health care outcomes by delivering continuing professional learning that is focused on the needs of the patient and their communities. The primary purpose of the role is to work in collaboration with partners to develop and design educational programs using multiple modalities, to enhance the CME website to support the growing nature of electronic learning, and to enhance joint learning opportunities with key stakeholders across the province. NATURE OF WORK: Reporting to the Manager, the incumbent must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team to meet the expected goals and objectives of the Division of Continuing Medical Education and its partners, in particular a number of College of Medicine/ Saskatchewan Health Authority programs and departments. Educational programs are delivered through multiple modalities and are scheduled at various times of the day and week to meet the needs of learners, including early mornings, evenings and weekends. Travel may be necessary. ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Ensure program planning and design is in alignment with CME’s Strategic Plan
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean, colleagues, committee representatives, SHA partners and other stakeholders and ensure the appropriate individuals and stakeholders are involved in programming decisions.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean, colleagues, committee representatives, SHA partners and other stakeholders to identify and prioritize the development of appropriate and effective educational programming in response to identified educational needs of Saskatchewan’s physicians and other health care professionals, thereby contributing to optimal health care outcomes.
  • Review knowledge, environmental and pedagogical changes in continuing medical education and incorporate them in the development and design of programming. Maintain knowledge about current evidence- informed educational approaches to ensure programming is consistent with evidence-based practice and current standards of care.
  • Apply accreditation guidelines, apply curriculum development strategies and processes, and incorporate adult learning principals when developing, designing, planning and administering educational programming
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean, colleagues, committee representatives, SHA partners and other stakeholders to develop program curriculum and appropriate learning modules or components using multiple educational modalities to establish education, training and support methods and materials, such as webinars, on-line courses, workshops, manuals, tools and resources using interactive and innovative methods.
  • Identify the needs of learners and implement solutions that synthesize current learning theory, sound teaching practices, and available technologies; establish course design and development processes, including learning objectives, content arrangement, sequencing of lessons, use of assessments and a selection of learning activities.
  • Further develop CME’s website to enhance the ability to share information and resources, distribute learning opportunities, and meet the organizations marketing needs to support the growing nature of electronic communication and social media.
  • Access existing content, tools, resources and research to develop and design and implement educational programs and learning tools using multiple modalities to ensure that continued use and application of the learning material is feasible throughout the relevant life of the content.
  • Collaborate with research staff to engage evidence informed decisions and ensure opportunities for research are planned and executed following sound processes and research protocols.
  • Periodically report on the status of educational programs; compiling data, program activity and trends, budget and financial information.
  • Maintain organized and accurate records and administrative processes.
  • Coordinate effective communication to all stakeholders.
  • Ensure a positive, diverse and inclusive work and learning environment.
  • Build and maintain collaborative and respectful relationships with colleagues and other key stakeholders.
  • Continuously identify, share and implement process and quality improvement.
  • Work as part of a team to support the needs of CME and actively and effectively participate on committees and work teams.
  • Promote continuing professional learning and development opportunities to physicians and other stakeholders.
  • Accountable for personal growth and professional development.
  • Maintain current knowledge of accreditation standards and innovative methods of continuing professional development for health professionals.
  • Adhere to University Policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Education, Education, Educational Design, Health Science or equivalent. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. Experience: 2 - 5 years experience in educational design, educational program development. Experience in website design would be a strong asset. Experience applying knowledge of distributed education and training principals and technologies to design and support professional development through the most appropriate modality. Experience applying policies and guidelines is essential and an awareness of the continuum of lifelong learning for Health Professionals and knowledge of health care delivery and processes of education within the College of Medicine UofS and/or the Saskatchewan Health Authority is considered an asset. Skills: Demonstrated ability to maximize knowledge translation by using multiple modalities and technologies, including on-line learning. Project management skills with the ability to make sound decisions, manage multiple tasks and maintain attention to detail and accuracy; ability to effectively work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team; effective interpersonal skills, strong communication skills; well-developed planning and organization skills; ability to handle interactions with tact, discretion, confidentiality and cultural sensitivity; deliver sound educational design principals and processes; basic accounting skills; proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office applications, e-learning technologies, website content management systems and awareness of technologies to effectively deliver and support educational programming. Experience with the CANVAS platform is considered an asset.
