Duties


Are you someone with a passion for science and the environment? Do you have experience with the design and implementation of ecosystem monitoring programs, species at risk recovery and/or environmental impact assessment? Can you collect, organize and analyze scientific information, including Indigenous knowledge? Have you developed monitoring protocols? Can you provide science-based advice to support decision making? If so, this might be the job for you!

As part of their duties, the Ecosystem Scientist will:
  • Develop ecosystem monitoring protocols that reflect regional and Indigenous priorities.
  • Analyze information from a variety of sources on issues related to the management or conservation of natural resources.
  • Provide information and advice to park managers.
  • Collaborate with partners to support Indigenous led monitoring and stewardship. Collaboration will also involve Indigenous governments, federal, territorial and provincial departments, universities, etc.
  • Lead projects or initiatives, including environmental assessments, that contribute to the management or conservation of species and their habitats.
  • Participate in Parks Canada\'s emergency response team that manages search and rescue and medical incidents, as required.
  • Support other national park\xe2\x80\x99s emergency response teams, as needed.
  • Supervise field crews.
  • Represent Parks Canada on regional and/or territorial boards and working groups.

Work environment

As the successful candidate, you would be based in Fort Smith, NT, an isolated community just north of Alberta. From here, you would support Wood Buffalo National Park sites including Fort Smith, NT and Fort Chipewyan, AB, as well as a national action plan team.
The Ecologist Team Leader I position is primarily office based with some field work. The successful candidate must be comfortable flying in small aircraft (planes and helicopters). Experience operating boats is an asset.

EDUCATION
Graduation from a recognized university with an undergraduate degree in resource management, conservation biology or other environmental science relevant to the position. (Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree required; master\xe2\x80\x99s degree preferred. Preference may be given to qualified candidates with specialization in boreal forest and freshwater ecosystems, climate change and/or species at risk.) Degree equivalency
EXPERIENCE
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders or partners to advance projects or initiatives;
  • Experience working on science-based projects related to conservation or natural resource management;
  • Experience designing, implementing, and reporting on: ecosystem monitoring, active management, species at risk recovery, and/or environmental impact assessment;
  • Experience providing science-based advice to support decision-making; and
  • Experience collecting, organizing, summarizing, and analyzing scientific information from diverse sources.

ASSET EXPERIENCE
  • Experience integrating Indigenous Knowledge with western science and monitoring activities;
  • Experience developing and maintaining working relationships with Indigenous governments and/or organizations;
  • Experience travelling or working in the field using various means of transportation (such as boats, snow machines, helicopters and/or small airplanes);
  • Experience living and/or working in a northern or remote community; and
  • Experience working on science or conservation initiatives related to the management of protected areas and/or experience working for Parks Canada.

ASSET KNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of key acts and policies related to natural resource management and environmental impact assessment that apply to Parks Canada Agency; and
  • Knowledge of Species at Risk (SAR) and SAR restoration programs

ASSET ABILITIES:
  • Ability to work with a variety of people with different perspectives;
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize scientific information from diverse sources;
  • Ability to make effective presentations adapted to the audience;

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
  • Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation; and
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid unrestricted Class 5 driver license (or provincial equivalent);
  • When a position is located in an area which is classed as isolated and/or remote, a pre-employment medical examination of the successful candidate and their dependants may be required;
  • Willingness to obtain Wilderness First Aid (40 hour) and CPR certificate;
  • Willingness to obtain Small Vessel Operator Proficiency certificate; and
  • Willingness to obtain Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL).
