The Educational Assistant - American Sign Language (with certification) provides classroom support in the areas of one-on-one or multi-student support (special needs students requiring life skills assistance, e.g., hard of hearing or deaf) and teacher support, e.g., administration, as outlined in the job profile.
Duties and Responsibilities
Are established by the School Principal within the parameters of the job profile.
Required Qualifications
Grade 12 education or equivalent.
Educational Assistant Certificate or 1 to 2 years related experience.
Must hold American Sign Language (ASL) Certificate; completion of ASL courses 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, and 203; or demonstrate strong ASL skills and willingness to obtain these ASL courses.
Demonstrated ability to follow standardized work methods and processes while working with children to support learning.
Demonstrated ability to function in the language of classroom instruction.
Demonstrated ability to function at the level of knowledge required of the students, e.g., in English, mathematics, etc.
Effective basic reading, writing and mathematical skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with hard of hearing and/or deaf children to support learning.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide personal and medical care to assigned students with intensive needs.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
ASL Certified Interpreter
Class 5 Driver's license.
First Aid, CPR.
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
WHMIS training.
