Tundra is seeking a Drilling Engineer based out of any one of our locations: Virden, Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Calgary, Alberta or Estevan, Saskatchewan. The incumbent in this role will be eligible to participate in Tundra’s flexible hybrid work schedule. As a member of the Drilling and Completions group, the Drilling Engineer will provide leadership in the planning, development and overall implementation of Tundra’s Drilling Programs and activities, focused on workplace safety and protection of the environment while optimizing capital expenditures and reducing operating costs. As a senior team member, the incumbent is expected to provide leadership and mentoring, and act as a source of reference to less experienced individuals within the organization. Reporting to the Drilling Superintendent, some specific duties and responsibilities of the Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing large projects or processes with limited oversight from Drilling Superintendent or Manager.
  • Creation, analysis and evaluation of Drilling Programs and post-mortem Drilling reports in conjunction with other Department members and associated vendors.
  • Coaching, reviewing, and delegating work to lower-level professionals.
  • Developing and implementing new products, processes or operational plans that will have an impact on overall results.
  • Recruitment to ensure adequate staffing of Drilling Supervisors to support planned drilling activities.
  • Review expected rig/service capacity requirements during budget planning process and ensure adequate rig/service capacity for planned Drilling Program.
  • Manage and assist in training of Drilling Engineers in appropriate problem-solving processes to deal with problems encountered during Drilling Operations.
  • Serve as responsible BDT agent for drilling well licenses.
  • Participate in weekly MDL/Drill Schedule Meeting process with Managers from Geology, Exploitation, Production, Completions and Facilities groups to ensure the Drill Schedule reflects an optimized balance between rig move efficiency, production targets, facilities and construction constraints.
  • Participate in the Drilling Department on-call rotation.
  • Participate in yearly bid review, award, and Drilling AFE update process.
  • Offering advice/mentorship for technical problems.
  • Provide management coverage in the absence of the Drilling Superintendent and/or Drilling Manager.
  • Other duties as required.
Candidates for this position will possess the following qualifications and competencies:
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering strongly preferred, but a diploma in Petroleum Technology or equivalent applicable experience may be considered.
  • Engineering candidates must be registered as a professional member of APEGM, APEGS or APEGA.
  • Minimum of ten years Drilling experience preferred.
  • Ability to complete all company required training; H2S, First Aid, WHMIS, Second Line BOP as well as other courses as required. Previous competency in the above would be a definite asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change by embracing new and different approaches.
  • Enjoy acting as a leader and contributor to high performance multifunctional teams in a highly collaborative manner.
  • Proven track record managing complex issues toward an efficient and effective solution.
  • Strong proficiency in project management.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in an efficient manner.
  • Established track record of successfully working with multidisciplinary teams to achieve success.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire confidence and commitment with strong motivational skills.
  • Ability to build and improve strong internal and external working relationships at all levels to secure the best solutions.
  • Proven proficiency with project cost control and innovating with service providers with respect to efficiency initiatives.
  • Travel to field locations as required. Tundra’s operations are within SW Manitoba and SE Saskatchewan.
  • Travel to other Tundra Oil & Gas offices as required. Offices are located in Calgary, Winnipeg, Virden and Estevan.
