About the Role

The DM is a strategic leadership role reporting to Vice President Operations for Alberta Buildings. The District Manager, Edmonton serves as a senior leader for region, directly accountable for the management, execution, and the profitability of all ongoing projects under their purview. Reporting directly to this role are the Estimate Manager, Senior Operations Managers, Pre-Construction Manager, General Superintendent, and Office Manager. The incumbent oversees the management of multiple ongoing Level 1-3 Construction Projects and some Level 4 projects with annual revenues totaling between $150 - 250M.

The DM is a progressive leader who is forward thinking, open-minded, and people centered. They will develop and implement strategies with regards to growth, future work, and market conditions, all in alignment with Graham\'s corporate strategy. Essential functions include leadership of large diverse teams, planning, financial accountability, HSEQ, and a relentless focus on meeting and exceeding customer expectations while promoting and aiding future growth in the market.

The DM will work collaboratively with their team to establish and grow partnerships that serve the organizations clients, employees, shareholders, and communities.

Execution:

  • Ensure projects are staffed appropriately.
  • Work in conjunction with peers and supervising VP / SVP to evaluate difficult situations and make potentially unpopular decisions.
  • Cooperate and coordinate with peers with respect to high level resource allocation in order to further Graham\'s interests.
  • Reach outside own unique environments, workforces, and workplaces to share skills, expertise, and information.
  • Oversee bidding of all complex L3 and L4 projects.
  • Oversee the internal accountabilities (revenue targets, overhead, safety, timelines, resource allocation) for projects under authority.
Planning and Process:
  • Adhere to the DM role and responsibilities as it relates to governance and outlined in the Graham Management System (GMS).
  • Focus significant time and effort towards forward-looking planning, and actively assess factors that will influence future strategies, including:
  • Market trends and forecasts;
  • Business development efforts and future work sources;
  • Business climate and margins (i.e. running lean); and
  • Market situations facing current and targeted client base.
  • Work with VP to develop business unit strategies.
  • Prepare three-year rolling budgets.
  • Provide quarterly budget updates.
  • Act with strategic focus and demonstrates to teams a compelling sense of the company\'s strategic vision, and how the project fits into that plan.
  • Oversee longer-term budgeting and forecasting.
Financial Accountabilities:
  • Meet overall revenue and margin targets.
  • Review and validate financial reports for various projects in real time to ensure that the longer-range targets are met.
  • Determine bonuses related to projects under the purview.
  • Recognize and leverage Graham\'s techniques and processes for tracking progress and work to address and solve complex financial models for large scale projects.
  • Understand the risks and opportunities related to multiple client contracts for ongoing and potential projects.
  • Make Level 4 commitments (i.e. contractual, spending, or purchasing) on the company\'s behalf as described in the Corporate Authority Matrix:
  • Contract Change Orders: up to $1M
  • Waiver Subcontractor security requirements: up to $350k
  • Subcontract Change Orders: up to $1M
  • Purchase Orders: up to $10M
  • Purchase/Sale of Capital Assets: up to $1M in value
Client Focus:
  • Manage the experience and expectations of clients to ensure positive relationships are established, maintained, and expanded upon.
  • Act with integrity that shows support for the company\'s strategic goals, its values, and employees, while maintaining constant awareness of meeting and exceeding client expectations.
  • Negotiate skillfully in tough situations with internal and external parties by winning concessions without damaging relationships and being direct and diplomatic.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with construction joint-venture partners, financing partners, key specialist subcontractors, as well as other stakeholders such as design teams, suppliers, and user groups that reflect and support Graham core values.
  • Actively participate in industry, client, and community relations to enhance and promote Graham.
  • Proactively seek new business opportunities through relationships.
HSEQ:

  • Take personal responsibility both for own health and safety, and that of other workers, visitors to the site(s), the community, and the environment.
  • Monitor and measure HSE goals and expectations using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Know and comply with client requirements, Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and all applicable government laws and regulations.
  • Review, approve, and close out all incidents to support Continuous Improvement (CI) processes and feedback for the HSE MS.
  • Review the Field Surveillance Reports (FSR) and initiate NCRs based on analysis and severity of findings.
  • Ensure that Quality KPI data for the project is documented.

The Person
  • Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business or a related field or equivalent.
  • 15+ years of experience in the construction industry at a management level. Depending upon the project size, scope, and complexity of the years of experience may vary.
  • Strong presentation skills and verbal / written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills with ability and willingness to face challenges, solve problems, and motivate others, while maintaining effective relationships with clients by meeting or exceeding their requirements and expectations.
  • Significant project management and / or estimating experience is strongly preferred.
  • Significant interpersonal skills and experience in dealing with diverse populations.
  • Commitment to quality and safety, and ability to evaluate project-related processes and make necessary changes to meet and exceed internal and external customer expectations.
  • Significant relationships with subcontractors and clients within geographical area of responsibility is an asset.
  • Proficiency using a computer and communication tools such as email, internet, and Microsoft products.
  • Proficiency using scheduling and project management software.
