Dissection laboratory technicians are involved in a variety of laboratory-based operations within biological, and environment science disciplines. They fulfill their responsibilities by sampling, dissecting, extracting, recording and entering the Coded Wire Tag results in the Fisheries and Oceans Database. Lab Technicians provide all the required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively, while adhering to correct procedures, health and safety guidelines. Dissection laboratory technicians carry out work that assists in providing important information to the development and management of the BC Salmon Fisheries.
The lab technician will:
Dissect fish samples for the purpose of extracting Coded Wire Tags, otoliths or DNA tissue, independently or with other techs
Extract and clean Coded Wire Tags for the purpose of code decryption
Read Coded Wire Tags accurately and efficiently via a digital microscope
Demonstrate ability to ensure accuracy and quality in all work. This individual is self-motivated and capable of independently managing workload and deadlines. They proactively solve problems and identify potential errors, taking responsibility for reviewing and verifying all work for accuracy before submission, and conducting thorough quality checks on all assigned tasks.
Carry out calculations with accuracy
Using computers and performing data entry of CWTs accurately and efficiently
Receive and prepare samples for dissection
ID salmon species
Expected to clean and sanitize the lab environment
Terms of Employment:
Seasonal Full Time
Wage: $21/hour
Work Period: July to January/February, Monday to Friday, 0800 -1600, may be required to work some overtime. Work may be extended pass February depending on fish samples.
Location: Vancouver, BC
Requirements:

Preference will be giving to individuals residing in Metro Vancouver area.

Qualifications and Skills:
Work motivation and initiative are a must
Must be able to handle / touch various stages of fish head decomposition including at times enduring the smell of strong malodors
Strong English communication skills, verbal and written
Good memory retention and ability to follow instructions / directions
Must have basic Math skills
Must be computer literate working with different programs
Detail oriented, high concentration and focus
Must be able to endure repetitive tasks

Able to work independently and with others

Maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment

Maintaining cleanliness of laboratory by following and ensuring strict sanitary cleaning procedures
Must have up to date corrective lens if applicable
Must be able to work all shifts as required

Education / Experience:
High school graduation or equivalent knowledge base. A degree, diploma, or technical training in areas of natural resource management, fisheries, biology, zoology, environmental science, aquaculture, conservation management, etc. is preferred, but not limiting. Relevant experience in a similar laboratory environment will also be considered. Salmon identification a bonus.
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:
Workplace health and safety is paramount as job duties involve working with dissecting knives. High concentration and focus are required not only for dissection but to handle 1mm coded wire tags. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs., sit or stand for a long period of time. Must be able to clean and follow sanitation procedures. Must be committed in staying the work term; no extended absences during work term due to volume of fish samples.
Essential Skills:
Reading text, numeracy, legible writing, oral communication, data entry, addition/subtraction, ability to follow directions/instructions and good memory recall.
