West Coast Circus is an inclusive circus arts school offering aerial arts, acrobatics, flying trapeze, tumbling, and youth development programs for students ages 2-102. Our youth circus program is one of the fastest-growing in BC, and we provide a safe, supportive environment for children and teens to explore circus skills, build confidence, and develop physical literacy.
We are seeking a dedicated recreation director to lead, develop, and grow our youth programming.
Job Duties
The recreation director will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the youth circus program (ages 2-17). Duties include:
Program Leadership
Oversee, maintain, and expand the youth circus program.
Create, implement, and update aerial and acrobatic curricula for multiple age groups.
Develop age-appropriate programming and structured lesson plans.
Instructor Supervision
Supervise, mentor, and support youth program instructors.
Provide training and professional development to teaching staff.
Assist instructors with challenging students and lesson management.
Teaching
Teach aerial and acrobatic lessons to children and teens.
Ensure safe teaching practices and consistent progression standards.
Management & Administration
Assist with student progress tracking and ensure progress reports are completed.
Support office staff with scheduling and parent/student communication.
Assist with hiring and onboarding new instructors.
Events & Rigging
Assist with student performances, recitals, and community events.
Support basic rigging setup under supervision.
Skills & Requirements
Education
Minimum: bachelor's degree
Preferred: Early Childhood Educator (ECE) or ECE Assistant Certificate
NCCP Certification
First Aid & CPR Certification
High Five Certification
Autism support training (e.g., CAN skills)
Experience
Required: Minimum 5 years of experience in aerial arts, acrobatics, or circus disciplines (teaching and/or training).
Experience supervising or leading instructors.
Experience working with children and youth in recreational or athletic programs.
Experience creating structured program plans.
Skills
Strong leadership, mentorship, and communication skills.
Ability to uphold program standards and follow safety protocols.
Customer service and parent-communication skills.
Ability to adapt, problem-solve, and work collaboratively in a team environment.
Ability to develop positive class culture and manage behaviour in youth groups.
Additional Requirements
Must pass a Police Information Check (vulnerable sector) prior to start date.
Must be comfortable lifting mats/equipment up to 40 lbs.
Weekend and evening availability required.
