Location of Work: 55 ByWard MarketJOB SUMMARYThe ByWard Market District is Ottawas number one tourist attraction and is the premier destination for shopping, dining, arts, entertainment and professional services for residents and visitors.Established in 2023, the ByWard Market District Authority ( BMDA) is the product of an amalgamation of the ByWard Business Improvement Area and Ottawa Markets. The primary role of the BMDA is to serve as the custodians of the vision, economic prosperity, and vibrancy of the historic ByWard Market district.The ByWard Market District Authority is being empowered with a broad mandate to deliver a reimagined ByWard Market district and experience. We are looking for an experienced public affairs practitioner who will bring strategic insight, energy and passion to our team.As the Director of Public Affairs, you (with 2 to 3 direct reports) will be responsible for providing strategic government relations advice and advocacy for the Corporation, along with guiding inspirational direction for achieving a revitalized public market.The ideal candidate will bring to the role an established stakeholder network and the ability to apply strategic thinking and oversight to our programs. You will participate in business development to cultivate opportunities and create new offerings.You will have the chance to participate in building an inclusive culture, district and experience. Were counting on your unique perspective to help the ByWard Market district become even better.Ideal Minimum Qualifications and Experiences:The ideal candidate will possess the following understanding and minimum qualifications: Education: A University Degree in, Business Administration, Public Relations, Marketing,
Planning or a related field Management: At least five to eight (5 - 8) years of progressively responsible experience, including five years in a management role, in positions providing exposure to community development business development, and may include experience in Economic
Development, Marketing and Public Relations; Economic Development: Strong understanding of business principles and market analysis and a good knowledge of marketing, communications, and business promotion.
Knowledge of the real estate and geographic and socio-economic characteristics of the
City of Ottawa is an asset; Municipal Affairs Knowledge: Knowledge of municipal affairs, preferably from past experience liaising and networking within a large municipality. People Leadership: Demonstrated experience in leading, manage, motivating and influence several direct reports and external contacts; Program Delivery: Inspirational Leadership, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; the ability to solve problems and meet deadlines under pressure; experience with statistical analysis and research is an asset; Financial Management: General knowledge of principles of accounting, budgets, forecasting, and short and long-range planning; Legislation: A good understanding of municipal planning processes, provincial policies, and working knowledge of the Ontario Municipal Act, Planning Act and Regulations would be definite assets; Communications:Must be bilingual, have excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills; ability to make oral presentations; ability to develop and use graphic aids.GENERAL DUTIES: Advocacy and Government Relations:

  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies to influence government policies and regulations that impact the ByWard Market District.
  • Build relationships with government officials, legislators, and regulatory agencies to promote the ByWard Market District Authority.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and provide timely updates and analysis to the relevant stakeholders.
Public Relations:
  • Manage the association's public relations efforts to enhance its reputation and public image.
  • Craft and implement communication strategies to communicate the corporation's mission and goals effectively. This includes creating presentations and presenting to various stakeholders, and facilitating meetings and discussions.
  • Oversee all Advocacy, Communications and Marketing efforts on behalf of the BMDA, including representing the BMDA publicly as required.
Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Work closely with the corporation's stakeholders to understand their needs, concerns, and priorities.
  • Organize and participate in meetings, events, and conferences
  • Collaborate with other industry associations, organizations, and stakeholders to build coalitions for collective advocacy efforts.
  • Leverage partnerships to amplify the association's influence and advocacy impact.
  • Coordination of communication flow and execution of communications with external client stakeholders and other internal/external teams.
Research and Analysis:
  • Conduct research on industry trends, policy issues, and market developments.
  • Provide data-driven analysis and insights to support the association's advocacy efforts
Strategic Planning and project impementation:
  • Provide input into a strategic plan for the corporation's public affairs and advocacy initiatives.
  • Set goals and objectives to advance the interests of the association and its members.
  • Participate in change impact analysis and change management activities
  • Coordination of multiple project/program components and interaction with other team members and internal partners to deliver projects with excellence.
Reporting:
  • Provide regular reports and updates to the association's leadership, board of directors, and members.
  • Other duties as assigned.
