OverviewWorkSafeBC is seeking an experienced and results-driven leader for the role of Director, Prevention Practice, Quality and Engineering. This is a key leadership position responsible for advancing occupational health and safety standards (OHS) across British Columbia.This role provides leadership in issues management, enforcement strategies, and policy implementation, ensuring alignment with evolving OHS regulations. As a member of the Prevention Services senior leadership team, the Director contributes to strategic planning, decision-making, and stakeholder engagement to advance WorkSafeBCxe2x80x99s prevention objectives.The director also oversees a team responsible for identifying regulatory needs, supporting enforcement officers, and providing technical and legal expertise. This includes collaborating with the Policy, Regulation, and Research Division, offering engineering guidance for complex workplaces, and maintaining expertise in the Workers Compensation Act, OHS Regulation, and best practices.Prevention Services and Prevention Practice, Quality, and EngineeringPrevention Services is critical in reducing workplace risks and ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations and standards through education, consultation, and enforcement. They provide expert regulatory interpretation, support field inspections, and assess variance requests to maintain compliance consistency. The department is the central owner of the quality control, improvement, and assurance programs.Strategically, the team works with the Policy, Regulation, and Research Division (PRRD) to develop and refine regulations addressing emerging workplace risks.   • Lead and manage the Prevention Practice, Quality, and Engineering teams, aligning with WorkSafeBCxe2x80x99s prevention strategies.
  • Oversee complex OHS matters, regulatory issues, and government liaison communications.
  • Drive strategic planning, policy development, and injury reduction initiatives.
  • Provide leadership in OHS law, policy, and technical expertise, including OHS Guidelines, variances, and acceptances.
  • Ensure practical engineering and technical support for workplace safety challenges.
  • Monitor performance indicators, drive continuous improvement, and enhance service excellence.
  • Foster collaboration and stakeholder engagement for high-quality service delivery.
  • Direct the Prevention Practice, Quality, and Engineering teams:
  • Practice and quality xe2x80x94 Ensure proper application of law and policy, issue guidelines, and resolve complex OHS matters.
  • Regulatory development xe2x80x93 Lead OHS Regulation updates and oversee implementation.
  • Engineering xe2x80x93 Provide expert engineering and technical support.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Specialists xe2x80x93 Maintain WorkSafeBCxe2x80x99s expertise, ensure effective strategies, and support stakeholder resources, including participation in external committees.

  • Integrity and accountability in making consistent, defensible regulatory decisions that maintain public trust.
  • Ability to build consensus, communicate decisions, and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience developing and overseeing quality programs to enhance consistency and performance.
  • Leadership in driving change, mentoring teams, and adapting regulatory approaches to emerging risks.
  • Proficiency in AI tools, data analytics, and emerging technologies to refine regulations and improve enforcement.
  • Clear, effective communication of complex regulations for various audiences, ensuring accessibility and relevance.
Your background and experience
  • A bachelorxe2x80x99s degree in law, engineering, or a related discipline, and at least 10 years of related and varied experience.
