Recruitment range: $111,916 - $139,896 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.

Performance range: starting salary to max of $160,880 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

Mandate/Core purpose of role

The Director of Partnerships and Engagement position offers an exceptional opportunity for engaging the private sector, various levels and types of government, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in energy systems transformation planning at local, regional, federal and global level.

This position is responsible for engaging with the private sector, NGOs, various level governments, Indigenous and academic researchers to ensure and facilitate active participation in the definition and execution of ACET research by partner communities, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, throughout the course of ACET projects. Communities lie at the heart of ACET, making this position critical in nurturing existing community partnerships and bringing on-board new communities to work with ACET researchers and other partners from industry. The Director of Partnerships and Engagement is responsible for maintaining an understanding of the energy systems transformation landscape across British Columbia, Canada, and the world and how it directly relates to community-level responses.

The position entails an advanced understanding of building and maintaining relationships with Indigenous communities, non-Indigenous communities, municipal, provincial and federal governments, private sector and non-community partners and supporting ACET funded researchers and ACET staff with community-based research and engagement processes. The Director works in close coordination with several units on campus, including Community and Government Relations, Vice President Indigenous, Research Partnerships and Knowledge Mobilization, Development and Alumni, and Research Profile. In addition, the position works with the five collaborating partner institutions, external research funding agencies, and other partners contributing to ACET.

The candidate must have a track record of successful community and government engagement, especially with rural, remote and Indigenous communities in British Columbia or other northern communities participating in ACET.

Objective
  • Facilitate matchmaking across the ACET stakeholder groups and researchers to identify and formulate the most impactful portfolio of projects for ACET utilizing research capacity within available resource constraints.
  • Lead ACET strategic action items for partnership and community engagement, as well as working with other within the VPRI to develop and implement ACET communications and knowledge mobilization strategic action items.
  • Build new partnerships with a variety of stakeholders to enrich the ACET initiative and facilitate additional projects.
  • Identify and develop partnerships and opportunities to leverage the ACET resources to attract additional investments and funding.
  • Make sure the appropriate players and knowledge mobilization strategies are in place so that ACET maximizes its societal, economic, policy and environmental impact.
  • Scale-up the ACET initiative to global impact.
  • Promote and support commercialization and intellectual property initiatives, and assist spin-out companies from ACET research.
Job Requirements

Postgraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with relevant specialization in one or more of the following knowledge areas: public policy, public relations, political science, business, international relations; or related disciplines. Minimum of seven+ (7) years of relevant experience in a leadership position with expertise in dynamic partnerships and community engagement, working in government affairs, public policy, campaigns, and/or community development in large complex organizations. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Established relationships and strong understanding of community, government and industry decision making processes.
  • Previous knowledge of issues concerning energy system transformations; community-based research; Indigenous and local knowledge; and how solutions mainstream into actions, would be an asset.
  • Expertise in community engagement processes, including work with Indigenous communities.
  • Flexibility to pivot and take on new, unanticipated tasks.
  • Experience working at the interface between science and policy.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.
  • Dynamic, people-and-results-oriented with a passion for implementing climate change solutions.
  • Strong analytic, writing and verbal presentation capabilities. Ability to communicate complex issues to broad audiences both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to initiate and execute plans to ensure smooth financial operations of research activities within multi-partner projects.
  • Ability to travel (generally 1-3 days/trip) within BC, but also Canada and internationally, as needed.
Preference may be given to applicants holding experience gained in a post-secondary or similarly sized and complex organization. An interest in energy systems and/or climate change solutions to contribute to the overall mission of ACET and support ACET members.
