Summary of Role



The

Director of Museum Growth & Development

is a strategic leadership role responsible for driving revenue growth and expanding Britannia Mine Museum's financial sustainability through a variety of channels. This includes overseeing the sales and marketing team, managing communications strategies, overseeing the retail and cafe operations, and handling outside sales (i.e. travel trade partnerships, corporate membership programs). This role is integral to the Museum's long-term success and sustainability. The position requires a highly motivated individual with experience in driving revenue across multiple channels. The Director of Museum Growth & Development will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to increase visitation, enhance the museum's retail and hospitality offerings, grow corporate memberships, and develop external partnerships that align with the museum's mission, vision and values.


This role requires a dynamic, results-oriented individual with expertise in sales, marketing, communications, and business development, particularly in the cultural or tourism sectors.


The Director of Museum Growth and Development will coordinate with the Executive Director and other department directors to operate within a

satellite cross-functional organizational structure

, where departments and teams are organized around key functions and strategically aligned goals, rather than being siloed. This structure fosters collaboration and flexibility, allowing each department to function autonomously while remaining deeply integrated with other areas of the museum.


Directors at the Museum will service this structure by ensuring the following:


Leading Decentralized Yet Unified Departments

: While departments are led independently, they work in close coordination with one another, ensuring that operations are aligned with the overall mission and vision of the museum. Each team is empowered to take ownership of its goals and functions, with clear communication and collaboration across departments.


Leading Cross-Functional Teams

: Key projects and initiatives will often be managed by coordinating

cross-functional teams

that bring together expertise from various departments (e.g., marketing, curatorial, site, programs) to drive innovation, solve problems, and achieve shared objectives.


Taking a Flexible and Adaptive Approach

: This structure enables the museum to remain agile, with teams able to respond quickly to changing needs, trends, and opportunities. Department directors and team leaders work together to align resources, share insights, and maintain focus on both short-term and long-term goals in the overall strategic plan.


Performance Analysis and Reporting:

Monitor and analyze relevant key data to report on performance indicators related to: marketing and sales performance, website traffic, campaign engagement, visitor numbers, visitor origin, sales conversions, cafe and retail revenue. Use relevant data for continuous improvement. Be prepared at all times to report to or present to the Executive Director and/or the Board Executive and/or Board M&O Committee and/or other committees of the Board and/or the Leadership Team and/or the broader team.

Skills:



Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Strong financial acumen. Strong understanding of visitor engagement strategies and the tourism industry. Excellent organizational, project management and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously. Excellent ability to think strategically and innovatively, with a focus on driving growth and increasing revenue streams. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including educators, students, guests, and community partners. Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders (partners, sponsors, customers, etc.). Strong background in the tourism, cultural services and or special events sectors. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software Strong knowledge of digital marketing tools, platforms, and strategies (SEO, social media marketing, email campaigns, etc.). Strong knowledge of retail operations (buying, merchandising, inventory management, retail cycles) Budgeting, financial management, and strategic planning skills. Strong process evaluation and data presentation skills. Strong understanding of sustainability as it relates to the museum and tourism sectors. Strong understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility as it relates to the museum and tourism sectors. Strong understanding of the principles of truth and reconciliation as it relates to the museum and tourism sectors.

Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Museum Studies, Hospitality Management, or a related field (Master's degree or relevant professional certification is a plus).


Experience:



Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in sales, marketing, and revenue development, ideally in the museum, tourism, or cultural sector. Proven track record of overseeing revenue-generating operations, including retail, cafe, membership programs, and external sales (such as travel trade and sponsorships). Experience managing and leading a sales and marketing team, with a focus on achieving measurable results. * Experience in financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting on KPIs.
