POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Finance is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization's financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, accounting, payroll, audit preparation, and compliance. Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the Board of Directors and its Finance and Audit Committee, the Director ensures financial sustainability and integrity through strong internal controls, financial analysis, and strategic leadership. This role also supports and influences organizational decision-making by providing operational and financial expertise across departments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Financial Leadership

Provide strategic advice and financial insight to the CEO, Board, and senior leadership team. Play a key role in organizational planning and decision-making, offering financial and operational perspectives. Lead the development of investment strategy in collaboration with the CEO and report annually to the Board.

Financial Planning and Analysis

Lead the annual development of operating and capital budgets. Oversee multi-year forecasting and long-term financial modeling. Conduct detailed financial, cost, and trend analysis to support business performance and strategic direction. Provide labour cost reporting and analysis to support operational decisions.

Accounting and Reporting

Oversee full-cycle accounting operations, including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger. Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting. Prepare reports and presentations for the CEO, Board of Directors, Finance and Audit Committee, funders, and other stakeholders.

Audit, Risk, and Compliance

Lead the annual audit process and liaise with external auditors. Ensure compliance with CRA and other regulatory requirements. Maintain a robust internal control environment and risk management framework. Review contracts from financial and legal perspectives and participate in contract negotiations.

Collaboration and Operational Support

Partner with directors and managers to support cost control, financial performance, and informed decision-making. Provide coaching and financial expertise across departments to build financial literacy and accountability. Identify cost drivers and support program managers in managing expenditures effectively.

Leadership and Team Management

Direct, mentor, and support Finance and Payroll/Benefits team members. Build and lead a collaborative, high-performing finance team. Support organizational change and lead improvements in financial systems and processes.

External Relationship Management

Develop and maintain strong relationships with funders, auditors, banks, insurers, and other external stakeholders. Ensure timely and accurate reporting to funding partners.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

CPA designation (CA, CGA, CMA) required Minimum 7 years of progressive financial leadership experience At least 2 years in a non-profit environment with strong knowledge of ASNPO (Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations) Demonstrated experience in financial planning, reporting, analysis, and full-cycle financial operations Experience in contract negotiation and investment strategy development Experience leading organizational or financial process change
