Director of Finance (Temporary)
Location: West Edmonton (relocating to Sherwood Park in December)
Type: Temporary | Full-Time | On-Site
Our client, a non-profit corporation primarily funded by the Government of Alberta, is seeking an experienced Director of Finance to provide strategic and operational financial leadership on a temporary basis for a minimum of three months. This role will support executive leadership in maintaining strong financial governance, reporting, and compliance during a period of transition.
The Opportunity
In this role, you will oversee all aspects of financial management, planning, and reporting. You will provide advice and leadership on policy, budgeting, risk management, and financial strategy, while guiding a capable finance team to ensure accuracy, transparency, and efficiency across all functions.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of financial management, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Develop and maintain the organization's financial strategy and multi-year financial plans aligned with operational goals and funding agreements.
  • Advise executive leadership on financial policy, planning, and risk management.
  • Oversee the preparation of timely and accurate financial reports, analyses, and recommendations for senior leadership and board committees.
Budgeting, Governance & Compliance
  • Oversee annual operating and capital budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
  • Ensure strong internal controls and compliance with accounting standards, audit requirements, and funding obligations.
  • Support coordination of internal and external audits, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and timely completion.
  • Lead the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures that support accountability and operational efficiency.
Funding & Financial Relationships
  • Manage financial relationships with government funders and partner agencies, ensuring proper tracking and reporting of grant-funded programs.
  • Oversee financial aspects of multi-agency funding agreements, inter-agency recoveries, and cost-sharing arrangements.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with auditors, funding agencies, and external stakeholders.
Team Leadership & Operational Oversight
  • Provide hands-on leadership to the finance team, mentoring and supporting staff to achieve high performance.
  • Ensure day-to-day financial operations, including general accounting, payroll oversight, and reconciliations, are accurate and efficient.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, integrity, and continuous improvement within the department.
What You Bring
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing is a strong preference
  • 7-10 years of progressive financial management experience, including senior leadership roles in the public or non-profit sector.
  • Proven success managing complex budgets and multi-agency or grant-funded financial structures.
  • Strong understanding of public-sector financial governance, reporting, and compliance.
  • Exceptional communication, analytical, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor a finance team while managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work on-site and obtain enhanced security clearance.
