The Role: The Director of Design / Senior Architect serves as the leader of the design team in the Waterloo Office, which includes architectural designers, interior designers, and technologists of architecture. The successful candidate is currently a registered architect with a province in Canada. The candidate has strong design skills and will be responsible for the overall administration, production and coordination associated with projects being performed with projects across Canada, as well as managing their own individual projects. This person will have strong interpersonal skills, and reflect NewGround\'s Core values: Excellence, Service, Innovation, Collaboration, and Communication. The Director of Design / Senior Architect is an experienced, registered architect having a strong background in generating and translating concepts into final solutions, in directing a design team and concepts, materials and methods of construction. This person should be excited about being both a player and a coach.

Skills:

  • A passion for design and new ideas
  • Substantial experience in project management including construction document preparation and field observation
  • Sufficient knowledge of engineering disciplines to evaluate and coordinate consultant work
  • Experience integrating and coordinating all disciplines into the building project
  • Knowledge of building materials, specification, and construction techniques
  • Excellent communication skills for a unique clientele who are community minded
  • Excellent leadership skills for a great staff. Tenure of staff varies from 2 to 20 years
  • Strong experience with all aspects of building design, including exterior, interior, and retail design
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp


Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance and supervision of design team members
  • Coordinate design work with the construction department
  • Ability to organize and prioritize personal workload and make necessary adjustments in meeting strict deadlines
  • Strong communication skills to work with clients, field personnel and internal departments in achieving deadlines and quality work
  • Maintain continual client contact from CD\'s through construction to ensure expectations deliverables are met
  • Maintain quality control of the design function
  • Carry out the overall architectural design of the project, utilizing the assigned project design team
  • Integrate and coordinate all disciplines into the building project
  • Meet the design schedule and design construction budget
  • Report to the President the overall status of work in progress


Expectations:
  • Travel can be extensive at times. NewGround serves clients from coast to coast in Canada
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects


Prerequisites:
  • Bachelor of Architecture degree or higher
  • Currently registered as an architect in a province in Canada
  • NCARB \xe2\x80\x93 must be able to license with provincial architectural associations throughout Canada
  • 10 years experience commercial or retail experience
  • 5 years experience leading teams
