Director, Media Relations

You are a dynamic leader who thrives on combining your public relations and critical thinking skills to boost a brand. You are a strategic problem solver, able to evaluate, respond to, and adapt to quickly evolving situations. You have the ability to inject fresh thinking and create easy to understand communication materials. You can easily craft a sound bite, and you're comfortable talking with media. You know how to build relationships that will bridge various elements of the company, and you have a proven track record of leading through potentially stressful situations to a positive conclusion. You have experience managing and mentoring people.

What you'll be doing:

  • Act as a company spokesperson on key issues affecting the company's business and reputation
  • Lead a team of professionals who field incoming media inquiries and act as spokespeople in traditional and digital media
  • Oversee and provide leadership to a real-time monitoring function
  • Build and maintain well-established relations with top tier media covering the sector
  • Build and establish relationships with key internal partners to identify and get ahead of issues
  • Research, develop and draft positioning statements, key messages and briefing documents on a broad range of issues affecting the company
  • Liaise with key influencers and shape the news agenda ensuring accurate and balanced editorial coverage on key issues
  • Support key executive communications program elements
  • Represent communications on key working teams and projects requiring issues or reputation management support
  • Work cross-functionally with the communications team to identify and manage issues, develop statements, background briefs and talking points, and to leverage and communicate viewpoints on a targeted basis externally
  • Act as key strategic resource in crisis scenarios
What you'll bring to the role:
  • Bachelors or graduate degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or others fields
  • 12+ years of public affairs experience with a proven track record in communications, issues management or corporate affairs
  • Experience in telecommunications and media would be an asset
  • Proven experience as a spokesperson in print and broadcast who can shape the news agenda
  • Excellent writing, communication, research and presentation skills
  • Exceptional relationship building skills
  • Quick, responsive and comfortable working in highly deadline-driven environments
  • Ability to self-motivate and initiate with minimal supervision
  • Mature, reasoned and able to counsel/provide advice to senior leadership
  • Ability to multitask managing numerous files and issues at once
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
