About the role

Commercial Banking (CMB) is at the heart of the Group\xe2\x80\x99s strategy to be the Leading International Bank, and the Director, Loan Syndications will be a key driver of business growth for CMB. They will be tasked with maintaining and expanding key relationships where HSBC holds or is actively pitching for the role of lead bank and Agent for some of our larger and more complex relationships.

The successful candidate will play a leading role in supporting all aspects of the loan syndications (origination, execution and coverage) offering across Canada, providing structuring and execution advice to teams across CMB and being a key source of market intelligence in relation to the Canadian syndicated loan market. The role holder will strive to deliver best in class customer experience, in line with the Commercial Banking strategy, to retain and grow our book of syndicate leads while adhering to the Group values, business strategy, operational policies, regulatory requirements and risk management practices.

Responsibilities:

  • The role holder will be required to deal with sophisticated clients and must have in-depth knowledge of complex credit structures, Treasury, Global Banking products and Trade to support managing some of the most sophisticated client relationships in the bank.
  • Meet regularly with clients/prospects and develop content to ensure mutually beneficial relationships. Our goal is to be the go-to financial partner for our key contacts and to be in a position to take the lead role in their financing and operational requirements.
  • Collaborate effectively with others across a variety of groups both internally and outside the firm
  • Work closely with the wider relationship team to structure innovative credit solutions for clients.
  • Ensure portfolio pricing is generating appropriate return on risk-weighted assets both at a customer level and at a portfolio level.
  • Generate referrals for their business and other Global Businesses, and drive proactive collaboration with those businesses, product partners and international colleagues to deliver maximum value of HSBC products and services to customers in portfolio.
  • Keep abreast of external factors influencing international business e.g. economic, cultural, geographical and procedural.
  • Continually reassess the operational risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.
  • Ensure a quality service for all customers by owning customer engagement, ensuring service excellence at all times, for all aspects of any customer, prospect or professional\xe2\x80\x99s interaction with HSBC.
  • Be an ambassador for HSBC and further enhance the bank\xe2\x80\x99s profile in the loan syndications segment
  • Participate in internal and external business events, road shows and seminars as required by the business.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence and perform to the highest standards, and promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC brand
  • Support cultural and behavioural excellence and high engagement across own team and outside of immediate team, to spread expertise and best practice.
  • Build the CMB franchise value/reputation in the marketplace.
  • Drive achievement against targets for revenue generation, new business, client retention, etc.
  • Contribute to the building of a professional, proactive, and performance-driven culture
  • Train and coach junior staff, assist with succession planning within the Structured Banking team and participate in coaching schemes as appropriate.
Requirements

  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting or related fields.
  • Minimum of 7+ years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in corporate banking / syndicated lending / credit structuring (consideration will be given to applicants with 5+ years of experience for an Associate Director)
  • Proven ability to deliver creative and flexible customer financing solutions including leading client presentations and delivery of projects from start to finish and developing a strategic dialogue with the client
  • Direct experience of building strong reciprocal relationships with clients and other financial institutions.
  • Excellent knowledge of Commercial Banking and Global Banking and Markets products, and a strong network of contacts across all business areas
  • Knowledge of the competitive landscape, with a detailed knowledge of competitor propositions
  • Excellent financial modelling, credit and risk assessment and deal structuring skills, particularly with regard to more complex and structured facilities with an international dimension
  • Strategic thinker with ability to assess debt capacity, credit risk and sales opportunities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a particular emphasis on delivering compelling presentations, and on influencing and negotiating in dealing with customers and colleagues.
  • Ability to effectively plan and organise, with tenacity to drive through results
  • Excellent time management, planning and organisation skills
  • Commercial acumen.
  • Innovative with a flair for solving problems.
  • Enthusiasm to drive and grow the business. The successful candidate will lead from the front and develop a leading profile in the Canadian banking community
