Purpose
On behalf of Admin Board, assists in all aspects of the Global Investment Strategy and operations for the Medicus Pension Plan. Works closely with the Administrative Board to drive and evolve the Plan\'s innovative, risk-optimized investment platform grounded in the Plan\'s mission of providing retirement security for Canada\'s physicians.

Accountabilities

  • Supports the Administrative board in their oversight of pension fund and investment strategy for the Medicus Pension Plan.
  • Assists the Administrative Board in investment and manager due diligence, asset allocation, custodian, analytics, reporting and the continuous improvement of systemic and robust investment analysis, policy formation and strategic implementation across portfolios and asset classes.
  • Develops policies related to investment, including asset allocation, asset mix, inflation, ESG, sustainability, etc., as well as updates to the Statement of Investment Policies and Procedures.
  • Works with investment managers and contributess to the leadership and integrated strategic and risk adjusted direction in all investment matters pertaining to the Medicus Pension Plan to the Board of Trustees, including contributing to recommendations on investment strategy and the evaluation of investment managers.
  • Expertise in traditional assets and alternative investments.
  • Develops communications around Plan investment strategy to Board of Trustees and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Works with compliance, legal and other stakeholders to achieve operational, business and investment excellence.
  • Understands how the Bank\'s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to regulatory compliance risk including but not limited to responsibilities under the Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework and the Scotiabank Code of Conduct.

  • Ability to work closely with Regulatory Operations & Controls, BNS Global Compliance, Internal Audit, General Counsel, or other relevant areas of the Bank as may be required.
  • This role requires an advanced understanding of traditional and alternative investments, legal and compliance, analytics, reporting, investment due diligence and asset allocation.
  • Identify issues, develop and implement recommendations, and exercise mature judgment in all dealings.
Functional competencies
  • 10+ years of investment experience with expertise in strategic asset allocation and responsible investing
  • Experience working with total fund asset mix strategies, risk management, diversified portfolios of public and private assets, and sustainable investing
  • Experience working in a pension fund or similar institution preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to operate in a highly matrixed, multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Strong leadership, communications, relationship management, analytical, problem solving, organizational, project management, and planning skills
  • Highly motivated, with a demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced work environment with tight deadlines and demanding stakeholders, and the ability to be flexible, manage change and ambiguity with potentially conflicting priorities, and drive for both strategic and tactical results
  • Strong cross-cultural leadership skills required to effectively interact with business partners, demonstrates flexibility and openness to differing ideas and perspectives, adapts to cultural differences, and effectively interacts with others of different backgrounds and styles
Education:
Advanced university degree in finance, economics, business or another related field and/or professional accreditation (CFA, CIM or relevant equivalents) and/or equivalent experience
