As the Director, Professional Practices you are an experienced leader with strong knowledge of audit department operations, a passion for continuous improvement and an affinity for coaching people. You have strong relationships with team members and are a sought-after source of guidance. You are an experienced auditor and value the opportunity to coach others in the optimization of the planning, coordination and delivery of engagement results. You are a player coach in that you take ownership and deliver on specific objectives yourself and you also lead peers and other team members to deliver on strategic initiatives.

Under the leadership of the Vice-president, this role is responsible for leadership of the Internal Assurance Professional Practices Program. You will co-create a vision, with the support of the IA Leadership team, for the future of Internal Assurance and create the vision for the role of Professional Practices.

The Director is responsible for leading, coordinating, supporting and reporting on key department activities and initiatives such as the operating plan and the quality assurance and improvement program. The latter includes ensuring methodologies ( eg risk assessment, audit planning) are effective. This role also oversees our skill sets inventory and seeks out and curates relevant research, training and development programs.

As a Director you will provide leadership, guidance, inspiration and support to team members, both those that report to you and the larger team. The primary focus of the Director, Professional Practices is to:

  • Lead, oversee, deliver and champion the quality assurance and improvement (QAIP) program and its components for the department, preparing annual and quarterly reporting as required.
  • Oversee and coordinate the delivery of the IA Operating plan with support from team members
  • Lead and develop team members in the Professional Practices team.
  • Oversee and deliver development opportunities to build the skill sets of team members by providing the necessary coaching, tools and environment to foster mastery.
  • Design and implement leading edge Internal Assurance methodologies (e.g. audit manual, risk assessment, follow-up, audit cycle) and partner with the leadership team for the successful implementation and usage of methodologies.
  • Conduct reviews of methodology and template usage and application, incorporating updates based on user feedback and research of leading practices.
  • Coordinate & validate efforts to ensure departmental resources are appropriately focusing on areas, processes or projects considered to be of highest risk to the achievement of organizational objectives through strategic audit planning and cycling.
  • Conduct internal and coordinate external assessments of Internal Audit's compliance with the International Professional Practices Framework for Internal Audit.
  • Lead Internal Audit's continuous improvement initiatives such as gathering stakeholder, senior management, business partner and associate feedback.
  • Assist the Vice-president, Internal Audit, with reporting to Senior Management, ATB Executive, the Audit Committee and the Board by gathering, consolidating and analyzing information.
  • Provide the Leadership team with periodic reports and updates on the progress of components of the Professional Practices Program and other departmental initiatives.
  • Actively participate with the Vice President, Internal Audit and Leadership team in setting and achieving departmental strategic goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate activities with external stakeholders such as auditors and regulators, as required.
Requirements:
  • University degree or equivalent, preferably in Business or Finance, supplemented with a designations or certifications in related field (e.g. CFA, CIA, CISA)
  • Ten years related and progressively responsible experience in a financial institution or audit role preferred.
  • Minimum five years of related and progressively responsible management or leadership experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of audit processes and Internal Audit department operations and activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of banking and business processes with understanding of audit principles and practices; control standards and practices in the banking industry.
  • Proven leadership skills with experience in mentoring and coaching team members and the ability to motivate others to achieve personal and departmental goals.
  • Strong collaborator with excellent relationship-building skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, strong interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills to gain acceptance of issues and ideas.
  • Self-starter who works well independently as well as in team activities both as the leader of the team and as a member of the team.
  • Proven time management and administration skills with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to research and implement best practices in risk assessment, auditing, risk management and project delivery.
